My brother is thinking of getting a USB tv tuner for his notebook, but wants to know if all dvb-t tuners can pick up the HD signal (such as the ones broadcast on TV3). The sites dont explicity mention they can so does this mean it cant? Or does dvb-t by definition include HD?

Dvb-t just means terrestrial (land based) digital transmission. Not all tuners are created equal. I'd say most dvd-t tuners can recieve the HD signal, but whether they display it is a different matter. Look up the specifications of the card in question.

The PCWorld Hot Products section featured a how-to (blogs.pcworld.co.nz) on recieving the HD digital signal through the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR900 Digital/Analogue Hybrid TV Tuner (www.ascent.co.nz)

I wouldn't mind trying it but I don't want to move this PC into the lounge room where the aerial jack is located.

661442 2008-04-22 23:39:00 They generally will pick up the stream, but whether they can decode it is another story. For example, my non-HD DVB-T USB tuner device picks up the TV3 stream in HD, but I need to use software decoding to actually watch it (DVBViewer). somebody (208)
661443 2008-04-23 09:41:00 The cards just stream the digital signal to your system so all of them will work. But what you have to have is software to display the stream and, crucially, a decoder that can decode our H.264 encoding. You also need an audio codec to handle our AAC LATM audio encoding.

Software that will enable this is GBPVR, Media Portal and DVBViewer. I use GBPVR with a Twinhan H.264 decoder and Monogram for the audio.

This is pioneering territory and not for someone who isn't prepared to spend dozens of hours boning up from various forums.

Yeah I'm doing this at the moment. A lot of thought and time has to go into it.

Have you used DVBViewer? I bought the programme but am unable to scan for channels as the DVBViewer wizard does not show Optus D1 in the scanning list.
Any idea on scanning? Any help appreciated.

DVBviewer is only useful when decoding DVB-T(errestrial) transmissions, I dont have it running at the moment but any satellites in its scanning list would only be ones visible from Europe/Germany (where the program was sourced from), so you're out of luck there.

661447 2008-04-23 13:43:00 Satellite reception is fairly standard there should be no reason why the details of any satellite shown couldn't be edited to the parameters used by Optus D1 or any other local satellite. apsattv (7406)
