2008-04-22 13:45:00 | Hi all :) Im tearing my hair out!!  I just bought a friend a laptop (an ASUS), when we got it home i set it up with the basics (antivirus etc), i connected form it to the internet over my wireless network. The next day she went back home to wellington (im in auckland), she got broardband setup and her router/modem arrived etc, she has plugged it all in correctly. From the laptop there is an ethernet connection to the router. This is where is starts to get weird... she cant access the router. If she types the IP of it (10.1.1.1) into the browser, if it works it will only work that time. Clicking any link in the browser based router setup and it wil stop working (Page cannot be displayed). If she does a repair on the connection it works one time again.. Its running Vista and ive read about some routers/modems not supporting the IV6 that Vista has, so i told her how to select IV4 instead. Still not working.. :annoyed: What makes it even stranger is that the same thing happened when she tried to use the internet over ethernet connection at her work.. it would work then stop, repair then working again then stop. So in conclution the only time its worked is here over wireless.. It doesnt really sound like a hardware fault beause while the connection is on then off, its too perfectly on then off if that makes any sence.. I dont know where to go from here and now feel guilty she has a laptop that as of yet she hasnt been able to use..:crying

2008-04-23 07:02:00 | And the firewall is...??? And whats the brand/model of the router?? And if shes using ethernet, to connect to the router, did she configure the LAN TCP/IP properties?? Is it on auto or did she assign an IP??

2008-04-23 07:18:00 | And the firewall is...??? It's zone alarm (free version) And whats the brand/model of the router?? D-Link DSL-502T And if shes using ethernet, to connect to the router, did she configure the LAN TCP/IP properties?? Initially it was setup to automatically aquire an IP address, after trying everything to get it working this way i gave up. I then found a post on the net mentioning that this has been known to be solved by assigning it an static IP manually and telling it to use the 10.1.1.1 gateway etc. Setting it told her to use IP address: 10.1.1.5 Subnetmask: 255,255,255,0 Default Gatway: 10.1.1.1 I told her to leave the DNS servers on automatic (i didnt have the xtra DNS servers on hand) and it shouldnt need this for simply connecting to the rounter anyway.. Still no luck  :(

2008-04-23 07:39:00 | Umm if shes using this laptop at work, does her work require a proxy? To connect to their network? The only other thing it maybe is Zonealarm, look in services wherever this is in Vista Look for Zonealarm's proxy service. This used to disable itself in earlier versions. I think it still does it in later versions. If its disabled, it'll also stop you using a browser, And probably stop you accessing the router as well. It needs to be on Automatic

2008-04-23 08:26:00 | Im not 100% sure but 99% that no proxy is needed at her work. Ill get onto checking that service thanks :) If thats not the problem do you have any other ideas?

2008-04-23 08:34:00 | Ask her to check what the revision is on this router It looks like there's an A (files.dlink.com.au) and C (files.dlink.com.au) revision Or Gen II (files.dlink.com.au) It'll say on the bottom of this router

2008-04-23 08:48:00 | Funny Thing... I fixed my mother's new modem connection issues (the same as yours) this afternoon by uninstalling zone alarm (as I believed it was preventing access, as it was not opening properly - as she corrupted it somehow by trying to disable it - in my absence). Typing the ip address 10.1.1.1. then went through admin user name and password, etc. but did not work. So we used the installation disc for the modem (and reset it) which worked - i.e connected to her ISP via IE... | kahawai chaser (3545) | |
