661252 2008-04-22 06:29:00 You can't upgrade using an OEM copy of XP.

You'll need to do a fresh install.

You'll need:
-A CD containing Windows XP Home or Professional
-A product key (resembling ABCDE-FGHIJ-KLMNO-PQRST-UVWXY)

Follow the instructions HERE (www.theeldergeek.com)on how to do a fresh install (aka a clean install).

661253 2008-04-22 06:30:00 Chances are your hardware won't handle XP.

You can upgrade..but upgrading like that is asking for trouble - far better to do a fresh install.

661254 2008-04-22 06:42:00 Do you know the specifications of your current computer? Processor speed, RAM, hard drive size etc?

If you go into Control Panel > System, it should give you a basic summary on the first tab. Drive size can be viewed by right-clicking on the C drive icon under My Computer and then viewing properties.

661255 2008-04-22 06:43:00 I don't think I'm capable of doing a fresh install

might just keep saving for a new lap top.

my pc is very unstable at the best of times and I have many dreams if attacking it with a axe or throwing it out the window.

:badpc:

If it's unstable, you can format the hard disk reinstall Windows 98. That will most likely make it faster!

We can help you with that if you like :)

661258 2008-04-22 07:06:00 Buy the cd, chuck the cd in, go into the BIOS and change the bootdisk to that cd.

Then boot from the cd then follow whats on screen

If u want to save whatever, like documents / email addies etc, export / save them first

Great Idea - BUT if the PC is capable of running XP that will be a better OS, Win98 may have problems with some programs these days, XP shouldn't be a problem as long as the hardware can take it.
