2008-04-21 22:35:00 | Hi all, I have a computer that is extremely slow to start up, I'm talking EXTREMELY slow like it takes 20 minutes to log in. I can log in as administrator in safe mode fine but am not sure what to do from here, is there a recommended spyware/virus scanner i can install whilst in safe mode and run to get rid of whatever it is causing windows to almost grind to a halt? many thanks in advance

2008-04-21 22:43:00 | NOD32, Avast. Depending on whether you want free or not. AND: Spybot, Superantispyware, Spyware Terminator, Spyware Doctor Starter Edition for spyware. Pick at least 2 of those in addition to the AV. And post a Hijackthis log here for Speedy to check out.

2008-04-21 22:56:00 | Might be quicker to just pull the drive and slave it onto another PC?? Ultimate Boot CD also has a few A/V & anti-spyware apps you could try too. I'd run HiJackThis and post a log on here for Speedy & Pancake to take a look at. You may be able to to disable a few things to allow you to actually run a full scan.

2008-04-21 23:35:00 | Maybe you could find out what you have in startup and stop a few of those loading first. You may have installed a lot of skype and chat software (or similar) that all want to start at startup, they can slow things down quite a bit... | Blade2 (6577) | |
2008-04-22 00:36:00 | I gather from your question that you are not to computer literate so I would think you should download Hijack this (HJT) from Speedys signature and run it then post the log here for someone to read.I doubt an Antivirus will be much help until you have done that as the problem is most likely all the things that you have running in the background. One may of course be a virus but that on its own should not slow things up like you have. If you are not clear on anything post back here and eventually it will get sorted.

2008-04-22 00:49:00 | ok, will run hijack this, post it up. might take the drive and and shove it into another computer and run a scan on it. cheers | mOOseCaNNoN (13319) | |
2008-04-22 00:53:00 | Might also depend on HOW much ram is in it WHAT version of Windows is on it Another reason why its talking 20 mins to log in, is it maybe running in PIO mode. which will cause the prob, youre seeing. Which maybe hardware not software related

2008-04-22 00:55:00 | 512 mb ram winxp pro sp2. aparently the lady's son tried to load eset security smart on and thats apparently what's slowed it down, i'll have a dig and see if i can remove it. hi-jack this log coming up too | mOOseCaNNoN (13319) | |
