371647 2005-07-12 22:47:00 Had a 486 dumped on me, OS is trashed, gonna get her up and running and give it away.Thought I might drop Linux on her,and I figure seeing as it runs 98 fine,or at least did run 98 with a bit of a struggle then surely there must be a lightweight Liniux distro with a basic gui that will run on it...

yes?....no?......anyone want a 486?....

371648 2005-07-13 01:20:00 Deli linux (http://www.delilinux.de/) is the only one I can think of that will work on that, well actually a lot of older versions of modern distros will work but deli is the only one that is still being made specifically for old mavhines 486s, vector linux has probably become to advanced for it Morgenmuffel (187)

371650 2005-07-13 01:34:00 Although I will warn you, from what i've read it is not as easy to install as the modern mainstream distros, I gave up installing on 486s as setting up ISA network cards confused the hell out of me when i first started in linux, (they still do, I haven't touched one since)

Cheers

371651 2005-07-13 01:43:00 hmmm....I did read some of the install and configuration issues, this system has lost all its bios settings as well, and shes loaded with ISA cards....

God I hate old comps, Maybe I just might ditch it, Or give it to the next kid who comes in asking for old computers (no idea how they get the idea to do this, but I get 2 or 3 people a week asking me to hand over my spare parts pile so they can create a master piece....bizarre....although not quite as bizarre as the kid who was told by his computer teacher that all he had to do was add more ram to the 1995 Mac he had and he could then install Windows XP on it......)

371652 2005-07-13 02:42:00 I never really took to DeLi, it was _too_ old.

Vector is my suggestion, even if you grab a semi-old version :)

I do this very thing. I get free hard-drives, cables, network cards, pc66 and pc100 ram, vidcards, and even a hardware modem from various shops around my area - and all I asked for is pc100 ram. I install FreeBSD and NetBSD on them, but I don't generally recommend them because they are not intuitive. And ISA is a huge pain in the backside.

The last machine I did up and "gave away" cost me ten phone calls a day from the new owner who kept asking me why this and that didn't work, and couldn't grasp the concept of passwords. Never again.
