2005-07-11 09:48:00 | Hi, Im setting up a pc just for playing music, its has quite low specs, win '98 era. Any ideas on which distro I should use? Something that is relativly small and preferably simple to set up/use. Thanks

2005-07-11 12:08:00 | Here (www.frozentech.com) is a list of liveCD distros, at least ten of which are dedicated as "home entertainment systems" (sort them by primary function). Some of them appear to be very small. I am not sure how easy they are to install, but being "live" they should boot right off the CD/DVD, and you can still keep the Win98 that is in there. | vinref (6194) | |

2005-07-11 19:40:00 | Try GeeXboX from the link Vinref posted. I've used this on a K6 233 with 32MB ram. It ran with no problems. It's only a small download. | 4bes (2848) | |

2005-07-12 06:58:00 | Thaks for the replies, I had a look at the ones you suggested. GeeXboX seems a little too simple as I want to be able to rip music from my cds, the box will not be on a network. Finally got the specs: 64 meg ram pc66 (putting in another 64 meg) 5 gig hard drive (adding another drive) PII 333mhz Any further suggestion?

2005-07-12 10:08:00 | If its just for mp3 playback, why not go with DSL (Damn Small Linux), its only a 50MB Download and would fit just nicely :) | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2005-07-12 10:36:00 | Get LFS. Eclipses anything out there | Edward (31) | |
2005-07-12 10:52:00 | No offense, but LFS for THIS! Gentoo would be overkill! Geez, Slackware would be the most 'advanced' distro I'd use for something like this. MAYBE if I was bored, a stage 3 install of Gentoo then just emerge mpg123 per-say.... but LFS??!?!
