661552 2008-04-23 21:57:00 Hi all,

Thanks again and for the last time on this subject--Wainui, when I downloaded the entire security suite- ESET has literally taken over ALL of my protection- the Personal firewall was installed, unasked, and all the Windows security icon in "Control Panel" has been eliminated, well over ruled probably---nothing is showing connecting anything with Windows.
I did as you suggested I do, and found I was behind the 8 ball---everything was completed and no Comodo firewall is needed - I was not even asked. It looks O K .
I am slightly nervous at such a massive take over but this morning my pooter certainly fired up faster.
I can only assume if one takes on "Security Suite" even in this 30 day trial, will not regret it.I will pay up on June 15 when the trial ceases, for the long term---unless all you guys suddenly backtrack and say I am a sucker etc.
I do know that my crack at the start as I WILL get Nortons regardless, was fatuous- I now eat humble pie

661553 2008-04-23 22:01:00 Spyware Doctor Starter Edition - Free (

Have you found any problems? I have seen it do errors on certain PCs (others are fine), it comes up with a memory reference error after loading.

Brand new PCs, older PCs, random. No hardware problems with them.

I just take it off if its a problem and give them one of the others instead but its annoying.

661554 2008-04-23 22:09:00 Hi PCTEK,

As long as I stayed with the "free version " of Spyware Doctor,as per some f1 contributor's comments, I found it works so brilliantly that I could, but have not yet, stopped using all others.
I have a successful history with Ad Aware 7, Ccleaner,RegSeeker, and think, just think, Rogue Remover ( never finds a thing )- everthing else now could disappear

Maybe they want ya to buy the full version - apparently that doesn't have any problems.

Effie - if you are running through a router ( LAN) have a look at This post here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) I also put some suggestions on how to set up a LAN through the firewall.

What will happen with the Trial is about a week before you should get a message saying its about to expire, to check the date open the program, and under Protection Status, it should show when it expiries. OR click on Help (top right) ? About and it will be there as well.

661556 2008-04-23 23:18:00 Hi wainui Tech,

Have done all you suggest but cannot see "configure rules and zones"- I think the full trial settings are automatic- see below all that I am trying to do
There is no button showing Zones etcand/or the bottom left hand corner- that only shows advanced mode etc
Can you enlighten me please?

effie c

Next on the left click on Set up - that will expand out the programs, select " Personal Firewall" then on the right in the middle you will see in blue writing " Configure rules and Zones" - Click that. In the ZONES tab (up top), you will see a button down the bottom left corner called "New" Click that - in the box that opens , call it what ever you want - Networks is always good.

661557 2008-04-24 00:05:00 HI wainui,

Smithie 38 has been in voice touch ( Skype) and he talked me through - end result,- the questions above post no longer need a reply,
We did though, both notice that the drive scan settings - for treatment showed the first date and time that came with the install-we both redid them but are they going to stay in place?
when I went into schedular there were duplications showing so that may be the answer- ie ythe setting up is/was a fresh one
I think though that I am up and away ( I suspect the full version did not need to have the choices that were having to be made previously) - everything npow is activated
Thank you again

661558 2008-04-24 00:55:00 Hi Effie, the trial version is fully functional but only has a trial time license, As you have discovered, by clicking on the Toggle advanced button as pointing to In this Picture (www.imagef1.net.nz) it exposes all the functions, I think that was put in the Anti virus setup settings I posted earlier.

If you look at the Pic (and your settings) you will see the listed processes, by right clicking them then edit, you can run through and change to suit your needs, the top one is automatically set to do a update every hour, the next one down is the one I change if on Broadband, Right click it / Edit - work through, and on the third box ( from memory) use the drop down box and change it to " every time the computer starts", then "run task as soon as possible" on the next window.

This way Nod will update as soon as the PC starts, and go looking every hour after that and install when available.

If you want to test the software, go This site here (www.eicar.org) and try to download any of the files, they are quite safe, The site says to run a scan and your AV should pick up the files, NOD actually should stop the file from even downloading, you'll get a warning from nod, bottom corner of your screen saying it done it job Example (www.imagef1.net.nz)

PS: when you wish to purchase it, its real easy, no mucking about the same way as Nortons, and IF you do have any problems you ask here, ( I regually talk people through on the phone changing the license key) or call Chillisoft and they are very helpful.

661559 2008-04-24 01:06:00 After years of trouble free service from Nortons though it was NAV2003 rather than the more bloated versions of Nortons, I changed one of the computers on this network to Avast Home with Comodo as the Firewall and this computer alone starts up and ready to do something in just on 50% quicker.

Avast opens quicker than Nortons ever did as well.

Since then all the computers on this network have been changed over to Avast.

Now, I fix the odd computer for other people, while I never myself had problems with Nortons, I have seen the results of Nortons on other systems, it can really slow a system down and I have seen virus even with the most upto date protection get past.

The most recent system I fixed was my neices. It had nortons and it was 100% updated. Or so the splash screen said anyway. It was getting slower and slower so all data was saved and it was reformatted. I put Avast in the place of Nortons.

As soon as she got the system back and hooked up, she went straight to her favourite teenage site to download some smiley's or something, teenage girl stuff anyway. She's been there a 100 times and downloaded heaps. As soon as she tried to download the first what ever it was, Avast stepped in and blocked her, the download came with a dialer. Every other download at the site contained either a dialer or a trojan.

Avast detected it as soon as she tried to download. Nortons never even batted a eyelid and allowed her to use those downloads.
