372590 2005-07-16 08:25:00 Actually, accordding to the article I read in the paper the other day, Plod isnt that far off
The article was about a scientist who had been studyiny the gene's of Maoris and comparing them to those of other cultures in order to trace their origins. Their gene's were most similar with those of the natives of Hawaii and natives of Taiwan, which is just a skip across the water from Thailand.
Food for thought.
If I remember correctly they also are supposed to have come from South America.
My partner (who is Maori) just laughs, she says she knows where she comes from.
Thats all that matters to her

372591 2005-07-16 08:32:00 What part is not true??The thailand part, yes I made that bit up,I don't know where they came from..The rest pretty much true..

Get a copy of "The Penguin History of New Zealand" by Michael King. If you can read as far as page 60, you'll find out that the Moriori were a group of Maori that continued on to the Chathams.

Anyway, I get touchy on the matter coz of my daughter (part Maori) means the world to me, yet is too young to stand for herself.
I know my partner (and her mouth) can look after themselves :D

372594 2005-07-16 09:21:00 Maori's are the native people of Thailand that came over here and ate the moriori's... We study them for fear as having the same done..
Taiwan. And they did eat some people. And war with the Morioris. None of that makes for rascist comments.

372595 2005-07-16 09:57:00 natives of Taiwan, which is just a skip across the water from Thailand. How stupid of a comment! That's like saying the Yanks are 'just a skip across the water'!

... Hope not!

One point I would like to make:-
I have not seen any posts in this thread which are racist.

I can be called a Pakeha by some people and this gives me call for concern at times.

I happen to be a 5th generation Kiwi and I did not arrive in this country last week.

372597 2005-07-16 14:41:00 what is a Maori and why does one study it?

It's hard to believe you don't know who the Maori are. It's a bit like us NZ'ers not knowing who're the Cherokee or other Indian tribes.

Anyway, Maori are the most recent indigenous people of New Zealand.

Doing a B.Ed (Bachelor of Education) degree it's required to understand the special circumstances and cultural needs of Maori in schools.

372598 2005-07-16 15:57:00 Maori's are the native people of Thailand

That's debatable. They're (whoever they are) studying their genes, and trying to asess whether in fact they were from Southeast Asia like the Aboriginals, or if they are like the Aztecs and came from South America

372599 2005-07-16 16:31:00 So what did everyone have for dinner tonight? I guess that's going as much off-topic as what this thread's topic of conversation has delved into.
In a nutshell, what's the meaning of life? anyone?

Anyway, pretty astounding of what that girl achieved. Though, I bet there are also 9 year olds in NZ who have the same capacities(read: attention span), to achieve what this Pakistani prodigy did.
