2008-04-23 02:50:00 | Speedy G- how come you have never been attacked by viruses? Well, at the mo, I'm only using Avast Home. No firewall besides XP's The networked PC is also using Avast Home, with no firewall These PC's havent had any firewalls for the last 6-12+ mths. I would say the main reason why neither have been infected, is neither of us use P2P programs. And I wont be putting any P2P programs on them, now or in the future. I dont use MSN, or Yahoo Messenger, I removed Windows Messenger altogether. Altho, the other PC does have Windows Live Messenger / ICQ on it, since she uses these programs to chat to her canasta mates. I use Spampal to reduce spam, and the flatmate knows NOT to open anything in email. She'll usually ask me to check it out, if it looks suss, I delete it.

2008-04-23 04:28:00 | effie c Glad to see you've seen the light........ Like pctek and wainui etc i've seen too many situations where norton has blandly stated that there was no problem but there WERE indeed viruses etc on the system...... personally if you offered me a free copy of NAV or 360 AND offered to pay me to install it on my home system i'd refuse....... Get nod32 it's far better.....

2008-04-23 04:58:00 | Hi effie - not going to put what others have written as Its all been said really, BUT to answer the Question asked of myself in post #5 This is the security setup I use here and on customers PC's Antivirus - Nod32 $70.00 1st year $44.00 Renewal Firewall - Comodo - Free Antispyware - Spybot Search and destroy - Free Spyware Doctor Starter Edition - Free ( from my sig as well) Super Antispyware - Free Edition I also use Esets Smart Security - Antivirus and Fire wall combined on some PC's instead of separate AV / Firewall- but thats not free. IF you do use Nod,look at This thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) #12 I have written how I set up the Antivirus - Pic's and all. All the antispyware listed above, apart from Spyware Doctor are manual, meaning they need to be manually updated and run, Spyware Doctor can be scheduled to update/ scan at selected times. I also use to clean out infected PC's malwarebytes (www.malwarebytes.org) There area couple of others I use for cleaning PC's one is ComboFix, that is "learning in progress" as there is no place to post logs that self analyze, and the one place I know of that does teach how to use it fully is not currently taking any new people.:crying But I'm working on its actions, learnt lots already on how to read the logs- there is one more reg cleaner program that I wont post here from the above "learning centre" as in the wrong hands it WILL do LOTS of damage real fast.

2008-04-23 07:53:00 | Lets see, I once had a system with Norton installed, back then, I sucked with computers, and kept it. Eventually, the system failed to boot, and I had to reinstall Windows from scratch. Apparently, Norton detected a virus infected file that was also a system file. It deleted it along with some registry entires and a whole lot of other system files that were at risk, and my computer could not even boot into safe mode. I did not know about last known good configuration or XP's repairing feature (told you I didn't know PCs back then). After that debacle, I got Avast, and then I didnt have any troble again. Apparently, the file that norton said was infected was not infected as I discovered online a year later, it was a sign that Norton itself was infected (some people scanned Program Files/Symantech (sp)) | SPARTAN 860 (2618) | |
2008-04-23 08:01:00 | Hi all, again, :drool Yes, Wainui, I have installed those in programs your signature--- bar superantispyware ( that caused me a recent query to F1 and Speedy got me out of it)-and have now succesfully uninstalled Nortons and installed ESET nod32- it eventually went in so effortlessly that I am wondering whether it is really doing it's thing $70 for the first install _ good - cheaper than NAV at $99.99- I have installed the 30 day trial- it really concerns me as whther I have everything set to do as had NAV, but a look at "Security Centre" shows a different coloured shield from previous and a float over the top shows ESET in it's place. There was a second download showing on the site - I think that is a lower level of security than the 18 mb I got ( from 16Mb)- or is it the firewall? I do not see a new firewall being used - I still, I think, have W XP Pro firewall- or did I am using ad aware v7 and think that it will do, it is faster than Spybot and showed up intrusions that Spy bot did not find. Enlighten me if this remarkable ease of install places me at risk please? :clap effie c

2008-04-23 08:24:00 | Hi effie :banana  << Sorry couldn't help that, you have just discovered the ease of which Nod32 Installs, never timed it, but it takes about 1-2 minutes Theres Not a lot to the program as compared to some other AV's but  What it lacks in its size and time to install, IT MAKES UP FOR in its performance, does'nt have all the system hogging fancy Interface with pretty icons - but what is more important - looking pretty or doing he Job ? Have a look back at post 16, right in the middle is a link to another thread I put, with instructions on how I set it up. - Do that as well. The 18 Mb file is the Security Suite, the smaller one is the AV on its own. What you now need to do is download the latest Comodo Firewall (www.personalfirewall.comodo.com) its the top one 17.3 Mb, What will happen is once its installed, you will get a few pop up windows on from the task bar with some programs requesting permission to access the internet. The most common one will be This one here (www.imagef1.net.nz) Heres what you do - if you open a program, lets say IE, and that box pops up, you click in the selection " treat this application as ( where the arrow is on that Pic) then from the drop down box select either " trusted application, or web browser ( if its IE/ FF ) then click OK. IE shouldn't bother you again untill its done an update maybe. If you leave the default setting of Allow this request, it will work but you will get the request all the time, as its only allowing it once. What will happen is sometimes the box pops up and its not to clear what it is, general rule, if you open a program and it pops up - allow it, if unsure generally I say allow once, tehn if it keeps poping up come back here and ask for advice, and supply the name of the app that wants access. If you are interested Here are most (www.personalfirewall.comodo.com) of the comodo screen shots. PS: That price $70.00 is the RRP for Nod32 - Thats all I charge as I'm a reseller (OK Shoot me - advertising ) LOL:) and if you got it from the NZ site, Chillisoft (www.chillisoft.co.nz), -- well you'll see the price. Enjoy
