661979 2008-04-23 22:19:00 I have a Compaq Presario 700AP laptop here that may well be dead.
The battery is flat. When the power is connected there is no sign of life, only the light on the power supply flickering. After about 60sec there is a noticeable smell & the power connection gets hot. I have disassembled it & there is a noticeable smell around the power input area but nothing noticeably melted. I am assuming something is cooked. Has anyone else been down this road?
I want to be sure when I tell the owner it is now only good for a door stop.

Sounds or smells like its history, is the Laptop still under warranty - that should be covered.

Been looking on google, seems it's a known problem. Still trying to find if it's fixable.

661982 2008-04-23 22:52:00 Not really relevant, but anyways...

I had a VERY old laptop (a 486) and one day I was using it and it just switched off and didn't come back on when I pressed the power button.

The PSU area inside it (it connected via a mickey-mouse cable) was quite hot.

I left it in it's storage box thinking it was dead for good, but about 2-3 weeks later I tried it again and it's worked fine ever since.

Time for insurance then.

661984 2008-04-24 01:00:00 Have located the source of the problem.
The power socket/jack is not making good contact to the motherboard.
If I connect the juice I can see it arcing at the conections.
I have resoldered them but it dosent seem to make any difference.
Has anyone done one of these?
