2008-04-23 08:24:00 | :2cents: I need your advice.... I'd like to buy a new PC but instead of a desk top like I have I'd like to go laptop...however I'm not terrible clued up on pc's so am asking you what you'd recommend. I use my PC for surfing the net, kids will download songs etc onto ipod, and I use it for my business mainly Word. I'd like powerpoint for school assignments etc. What ram GB would I need? I don't want a cheap model that I will want to axe to death, nor do I want to break the bank. I've heard a bit about wireless option and wondered if that was a good deal for internet? Many many thanks Wendy

2008-04-23 08:31:00 | What ram GB would I need? If you get a laptop with Vista I'd recommend 2GB. If you can find one with XP installed 1GB should be fine for your needs. Are you going to be carrying it round much or will size/battery life not be major issues?

2008-04-23 08:46:00 | For wireless internet. If you are wanting wireless internet that might not be a good way for home-based because it may be more expensive and you may need a external wireless modem connected to your laptop so it becomes less portable. There might be some option to connect it wirelessly to the laptop but below might be better. Get a wired broadband solution and get a wireless router. This wireless router sits next to the TV or anywhere there is a telephone jack (adsl or telstra clear or whatever) so when you are carrying the laptop around all it need is the builtin wireless feature. Nothing else is needed. It may be cheaper too ...

2008-04-23 09:08:00 | If you can find a machine with XP you're lucky :) You can't get it after June this year. I recommend this spec for XP: Intel Core 2 Duo processor (1.5GHz or greater) At least 1GB RAM At least 80GB Hard disk And for Vista...the same except At least 2GB RAM. If you buy an ASUS model with Vista Business or Ultimate you get the Windows XP Pro downgrade discs, so you can load XP onto it instead of Vista. Get an ASUS or Dell. Avoid Acer at all costs!

2008-04-23 09:20:00 | XP laptops are readlily avaliable . I sell several per week . They will continue to be until next year at this stage . Only the retail versions of XP ceases in June . OEM will carry on for a bit longer . The laptop I sell plenty of is thr lenovo (IBM) R61E thinkpad, with 15 . 4 MATT finish screen, 120 gig HDD, 2 gigs ram etc etc . They are not hard to find nor are desktop PC's running XP . Go to a real computer store and not a "home appliance" or trickie Dickie type store . Decent laptop with the option for XP or Vista your choice, relatively fast and a good price . Just make sure no matter what laptop you end up buying, you get rid of half the preloaded rubbish, especially Norton's . These preloaded programmes often will slow your machine down and are commonly security vulnerabilities .
