661162 2008-04-22 04:35:00 Hey,

I am soon going to have a spare computer to play around with and want to set it up as a media centre pc. Now it is pretty old but not really worth upgrading since I will not be playing games on it.

It has an ASUS motherboard that has 1 AGP 4x slot.

What I want is to buy a graphic card that will have DVI or DVI dual link output so I can connect it to an HDMI port on my plasma TV. I know this will only be able to transfer video.

I would like your recommendations on what graphic card to get? I've been looking around but am just not sure.

Also, how much difference will dual link DVI make compared to just DVI?

Thanks for your help,

Gregor

661164 2008-04-25 19:52:00 Hmm well, I'm using the ASUS 9550. Nothing fantastic, but its good enough for me.

Its got 2 DVI-D (or DVD-I) connections.

It comes with a VGA/DVI adapter, or 1 DVI/VGA connection, and its 8x I think.

BUT, somehow, I dont think you can connect it to an HDMI connection.

I maybe wrong, I've never seen an HDMI connector, or a TV with one on it, either

Altho if your mobo only supports upto 4x, it may work, but only at 4x

It'll probably be better if you had a mobo with an HDMI video adapter on it.

They do exist

661165 2008-04-26 01:24:00 Just for playing DVD's and stuff? I'd recommend getting atleast one with 128mb DDR3 memory on it anyway just so that you can have higher resolutions if your TV can go there but you'll get away with virtually anything available new now with DVI out on it. They're going pretty cheap now too.

Speedy, you can definately plug DVI into a tv with HDMI, but you need an adaptor inbetween because I believe most TV's do not have the DVI connection as standard, just that VGA one. This photo is a good comparison.

whats the specs of the PC ? no point getting a top end card if the pc can't make use of it, it will be a waste of $$$ .

661168 2008-04-26 09:06:00 My mobo has onboard hdmi and dvi. Are you not looking at rather getting a mobo like mine and a cheap cpu maybe? or just a mobo with pci-e and get a pci-e card?
Just ideas
