662521 2008-04-25 09:16:00 I have a Lacie 250GB F.A.Porsche external USB hard drive that seems to be corrupted. When connected and turned on it slows the computer down to a crawl and when trying to access gives the error "X: is not accessible. The device is not ready."
I'm wondering if there is some recovery or formatting software that could be recommended as the device only contains backups and a few photos that, if unrecoverable, can be lost.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

662522 2008-04-25 09:19:00 Take it out and put it in the case.

Which will probably be the easiest and cheapest way

662523 2008-04-25 10:57:00 You can format it in what ever file system you like - however it is normal to format in FAT32 since (even though it is a proprietory file system) it is universally accessible by any operating system. johnd (85)
662524 2008-04-25 11:32:00 Thanks speedy gonzales. I managed to pull apart the external drive case with a screw driver and have installed it into the PC. Shows up in disk management (eventually) as an apparently "healthy" drive but I cannot explore the disk at all. Any ideas? JMoore (9352)

Plenty of "healthy drives" are completely screwed.

662526 2008-04-25 13:04:00 OK cheers for the reply. What software do you suggest I use? Or just run it through the Windows disk check utility? JMoore (9352)
662527 2008-04-26 06:59:00 BUMP, how can I check the drive for errors/bad sectors? JMoore (9352)
