I think the controller checks the drives. I just installed an Adaptec 2100S with Backplane Caddy & 3 SCSI 2 ultras into the rig below. The RAID BIOS on boot will allow you to entry utilities for controller and drives. What controller are you using? |

2008-04-24 08:10:00 | It's an Adaptec something: The controller has "AHA-2940W/2940UW" silkscreened on the board, A sticker stuck to the main chip says "AHA-2940i/HP" But windows XP detects it as an "Adaptec AIC-7880" So you tell me! :p Either way, there is no config utility or message at POST whatsoever (unless it has been turned off - the controller is 2nd hand)

2008-04-24 11:01:00 | AIC 7880, that rings a bell!, is it out of a HP server?, I think I have one in a ML150G5, its quite new?, is that the PCIx one?. You dont see a ctrl <A> on boot?. Is the motherboard recognizing it?

2008-04-24 11:31:00 | Wouldn't have a clue what it's out of, but it's standard PCI and looking up the FCC-ID it seems it was made in 1995 Strange though, Adaptec even have drivers for Vista available... for the AHA-2940 series at least. I'm thinking now that AHA-2940 is the card model and AIC-7880 is the chipset? I got it from trademe as the controller I already had (DPT PM2124W) was only supported up to Windows NT 4.0 I get the config utility after POST on the DPT controller and both drives listed but nothing with the adaptec one. But it is working and is detected by the BIOS (shows up in PCI devices list as 'Storage Controller') Windows XP detects it, installs it, and detects and installs both hard drives connected to it.

2008-04-24 13:04:00 | Guide here (page 9) (www.adaptec.com) states you should see <ctrl + a> at boot...Do you have a logo cover the boot screen? | SolMiester (139) | |
2008-04-24 13:42:00 | this PDF? download.adaptec.com If you look at page 1, my card looks like the 2nd one shown, except there is no 50pin connector or external connector. There is no 'Host Adapter BIOS' chip either: www.imagef1.net.nz Perhaps having no BIOS chip is why nothing appears on my POST screen?

2008-04-24 21:44:00 | Your quite right, the BIOS chip is missing?.....yet the install guide shows a BIOS on both models? And I was looking at these on trade me the other day, had a fixed price of $15 offered.... Glad I got the RAID version....It actually has a 'knightrider' light on the top.....looks good in the windows....LOL I'm not sure how you can check the drives then?! I'm out of ideas then Agent! LOL, just realized you were posting at 1.20am!!

2008-04-24 22:29:00 | Did you just buy one off trademe too? I got mine from a guy 'fairtrader'. $5 reserve, I got it for that. My DPT card also has the knightrider style red lights on it, unfortunately, unless I'd like to run NT 4.0 I can't really use it :( I didn't think you needed a BIOS config utility to check the drives? I'm looking for a program like seatools that can handle SCSI and will do an in-depth analysis of the drive condition. I'm thinking something made specifically for compaq drives would probably be better suited to them? (the same way that seatools works best on seagate drives but still provides limited support for other brands) The thing with that is I haven't been able to find it. Did compaq actually make the drives or are they just a rebranded something?
