Microsoft is offering to replace pirated copies of its software with the genuine article — as long as you’re prepared to finger the source.

374456 2005-07-22 22:11:00 sweet. i know a few people here who have been unwittingly sold pirated programs. i'm sure they will like to get something back for their money :) tweak'e (69)
374457 2005-07-22 22:24:00 They did something like this a while ago for England or American residents only... Basically you fess up that you've got a pirated copy and they replace it for you.... No fingering needed. There was a catch or two, but it sounds like Microsoft are keen to give windows away, and at the same time stop pirating... Chilling_Silence (9)
374458 2005-07-23 02:12:00 simply beg a hated classmate for a pirated copy of windows then blame him

MUHAHAHAHA

Note to moderators: i was just joking :) and have no pirated copies of windows stashed away at home

374459 2005-07-23 07:06:00 I really wonder what action Microsoft would take against said pirates? Chilling_Silence (9)
374460 2005-07-23 09:08:00 Would depend on the situation. If it was found out that a big name computer retailer was selling PCs with pirated XP on it, things might actually happen. If it was just that "Fred from my maths class" gave you the disc, it would be a tad different. Jeremy (1197)
374461 2005-07-23 09:13:00 They take action against anyone selling ilegal copies, Some joker was prosecuted for it in Palmerston North, Smale scale but for commercial profit.

Pity they don't go after all those trademe sellers that sell machines loaded with "demo" software...

374462 2005-07-23 09:53:00 Speaking of "demo" software, someone told me it could be set up to expire after a set number of days. Has anyone else heard of this? Or is this BS?

374463 2005-07-23 10:15:00 You can get demo suites from MS,all of which are disabled after a set amount of time unless the owner upgrades it to the full version. Metla (12)
374464 2005-07-23 10:51:00 I have a copy of all of the main MS applications here in demo form. (Windows XP, Office, Publisher, etc)

You just sign up for them on their website and they post the CDs, took about 2 days flat.

Never bothered to load them, as I run them as fully purchased versions anyway. Was interested in how long it would take I guess, they were very responsive.

The even phoned up a couple of weeks later to see if I was happy with the software.
