374176 2005-07-22 00:05:00 Hi all,

A quick question.

I see a lot of new 2.4Gig cordless phone i.e Panasonic being advertized these days. Are these phone DECT standard ? The DECT standard from what I can see is 1.8G. There seems very little info on the side of the boxes to indecate what they are..

TIA.

374178 2005-07-22 00:47:00 OK . Found the answer . They use Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) However 2.4G is a DECT frequency but not in NZ which is still 1.8Gig paulw (1826)

What's a DECT?
From Dick Smith's site:

UniDECT Digital Enhanced Cordless Technology

Formerly known as Digital European Cordless Technology, because of it's European origin, DECT is now the preferred cordless telephone technology across the overall European market, exceeding analogue sales . DECT is now an accepted technology in over 100 countries including Australia and New Zealand . Currently, in Australia, DECT can only be used on a site by site licence basis . In New Zealand, these similar site restrictions were removed on 1st March 1999 and the demand for DECT product is high from business users such as hospitals, warehouses, supermarkets, chain stores, factory sites, car yards, SOHO users and early adopter home markets where only the best is good enough . Extended range - DCA (Dynamic Channel Allocation) technology ensures that the best available radio channels are always used, even during a call, allowing long range performance up to 300 metres . Digital Sound Quality comparable to corded phones is achieved using ADPCM (Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation) speech encoding . Handset to handset communication including call conferencing . Multi Base Use - Up to 4 base units can be used from one handset . Multi Handset Use - Up to 8 handsets can be used from one base station .

374181 2005-07-22 06:45:00 Having read the above, has anybody found dect to be any better than the other? Cicero (40)
374182 2005-07-22 11:54:00 I have a Panasonic DECT phone; it is smaller; has more features; is more 'secure'; has longer range; better sound quality; and puts out less 'radiation' than my admittedly old Sanyo analogue cordless. The Sanyo has better battery life...
Apparently my Panasonic phone will work with 'GAP' compatible DECT phones from other manufacturers. Click here (en.wikipedia.org) for a DECT information overload.
I also understand that the 2.4Ghz Panasonic phones aren't DECT. However Uniden uses a 2.4Ghz technology called WDECT or wide DECT.
