373728 2005-07-20 02:16:00 Why cant they just release a patch or something? I just downloaded 1.0.5 the other day, and it annoys me having to download it again :).

In fact, i have noticed that they dont seem to release any patches at all.

Is this something like a preference of theirs, or do they make the program in a way that patches are not suitable?

373729 2005-07-20 05:51:00 I think the concept of "patches" is a little off base for Firefox and the whole Mozilla Suite .

Firefox isn't like your ol' Windows with just one central clearing house for ideas and security breaches to be repaired under one roof . The roof of Firefox is all over the world, and as it is an open-coded application, it is being changed all the time . There are nightly builds and also a constant stream of tweaks that are being developed, sent, reviewed, and uploaded to download all the time . Watch the upper right corner of the Firefox Browser page for the notice that there's an upgrade or new build available . It's a little red icon of an up arrow (^), that when clicked will get the latest repairs and versions .

The nicest part of Firefox is that there are always "eyes" on the system in the form of some really good, GOOD code people out there who I daresay can flame your mobo in an instant or ruin you potroast (OK, Billy to NZ'rs) in your microwave if you mess with it .

The same cannot be said of M$ and all the products they have to watch . . like old W-95, 98, 98SE, ME, and other more obsolete codes . That costs too much $US/$NZ for M$ to just pour down the gullet of some board of directors in charge of Security patches this month for creaky (olde) systems .

Firefox is newer, better and simpler and has a much more dedicated group of savants who want to see it work . Besides, it twists Mr . Bill's tail when Firefox succeeds where M$ does not .

I might sound like I really don't like M$ very much, but that's far from the truth . I actually enjoy using it and feel a certain "comraderie" . It works for me where I need it to, and when I don't want to use all the facets of M$, I then switch to Firefox for the stuff that I can really trust a little easier and with a less skeptical attitude .

See?

373730 2005-07-20 05:56:00 Incremental updates are on the list of features to be implemented, Mozilla themselves have stated they aren't happy about requiring users to download the entire app for each update. Metla (12)
373731 2005-07-20 06:49:00 Once FireFox 1.1 is out they'll start releasing binary patches. They are building in this functionality for 1.1 Jeremy (1197)
373732 2005-07-20 12:00:00 thanks for explaining. I shall be looking forward to 1.1. mejobloggs (264)
