In the face of outcry over camel racing's heavy reliance on underage jockeys, Persian Gulf states fond of the sport have begun experimenting with robotic jockeys . "This race is a sort of official testing, before the main competition starts next October," Shawqi Al Mahmoud, chair of a special committee established to develop robot jockeys, told Gulf News . "Public, racing staff and camel owners will have to get used to this new kind of competition . " Early trials appear to have gone well . Indeed, Qatar was so impressed that it's already ordered 150 mechanical jockeys . And that bodes well for the former riders, who stand a good chance at a healthier lifestyle if the robo-jock trend catches on . |
