372734 2005-07-16 11:20:00 I'm confused. Reading the following passage from the LTSA website:

Any motor vehicle (including any tractor), or combination vehicle, that is not a motor cycle that has a gross laden weight or gross combined weight of 4500 kg or less, or, for a special-type vehicle that is a forklift, has a gross laden weight of 15 000 kg or less.

When they say "gross laden weight", do they mean the "Maximum" gross laden weight of a vehicle, or the actual gross laden weight at the particular time. Ie. a small truck has a TARE weight of about 2500kg, and a "maximum gross weight" of 6500kg. Is it therefore a class 1 vehicle? Some people have told me it is, but I'm not too sure.

Anyone know anything about this?

372735 2005-07-16 11:59:00 I guess you are wondering about what class of drivers license you need?

You need to consider the actual weight of the vehicle INCLUDING the load at the time.

If you are driving something and you are stopped by the Police and then are weighed the GROSS weight is what you need to have a license for.

The tare weight of the vehicle can differ in the event it was weighed with a empty fuel tank or a full fuel tank. If you have a very heavy driver like 200Kg and twin fuel tanks which hold 400 litres each this will add up to another ton quite easily.

Your main problem will be the actual weight of the vehicle you are driving when stopped and weighed.

372736 2005-07-16 12:27:00 I enquired about this at work, because i am driving my own twuck on a standard car licence. My understanding of the situation was that i could drive my 3½ ton twuck on a car licence and it would only be IF (when) i loaded it up that there would b a problem, however, it appears that the law is not well written on the subject and there is some dought as to if gross weight means actually total weight, or what the vehicle is licenced for......

I'm getting my HT ASAP.

372737 2005-07-16 12:52:00 also you need to factor in the weight of trailer and load. your gross weight is entire vechile + any trailers and any load.

they did a blitz some time back around here. a few trademans vans and utes where over weight. (most vans and utes can only carry a 1000kg load)

edit: just to add the rules on weight limits exspecially for trailers is very grey.

372738 2005-07-16 23:40:00 The reason I ask is that I have colleagues who drive a work truck occasionally. The truck is rated to have a maximun GLW of 6500kg, but it rarely carries loads that will raise the gross laden weight to over 4000kg.

So in other words, I take it that as long as you don't load up the truck so it goes over 4500kg total weight, then you can drive it with a normal class-1 Licence??

This is the collective opinion of the people i work with. They are intellegent people whose business is to truck round and set up shows.

If you choose to take the risk, and test the law, so be it. Me, i'd just get a class2 ASAP. Clearly you are driving vehicles that may go over the weight limit for a class1, and having a class1 licence will only hold you back.

Theres plenty of driving schools who can fast track the process for you.

O yeah.. theres a truckload of subsidys to pay for this. Your local driving school will know all the scams...er i mean subsidys :D

Yes, Your fine, I have been pulled up dozens of times in unladen light trucks and had no issue, and all the run-abouts owned by the company( family bizzo) are drivable with a car lisence when unladen.

The worst that has happened is I once had to remove a ton of concrete rubble off the deck at a weighbridge.

But no one has recieved a ticket in them for the last 10 years for wrong lisence.
