If in Auckland, find out when the Investors club is having an information evening. Pat & Alf Whitehead. You can PM me for the email address, but phone 09 -eight-two-seven-six-three-zero-five.

374017 2005-07-21 06:25:00 Lots of good advice there.
One of the most important points is your location.

As it's impractical to own a rental property at a distance (Well, for a beginner - as opposed to the absentee landlords with deep pockets who pay people to manage their properties), I wouldn't offer an opinion until I knew which part of the country you live in.

That way, some of the pros & cons could be assessed.
There are still places which have opportunities for someone who can look ahead. For instance, the small town of Milton, south of Dunedin, has been Sleepy Hollow with cheap housing for years, but is having a property boom because Dunedin's long-awaited new prison is being built nearby at Milburn on the Taieri Plain.
A smart investor could've done wonderfully by buying as soon as that site was chosen - and no doubt some did.
But unless you can see a reason why a particular area is about to have a housing shortage, you'll need to be a long-term investor before making much profit.

(That's assuming you need to borrow to buy, of course. If you're so loaded with capital that you don't need a mortgage, that's another story... But even so, you could still probably make more on fixed deposit rates at present.)

374018 2005-07-21 20:55:00 Currently i do Tech Support for IT users. And to be honest it sucks paywise.
I think doing the IT degree was a waste of time. You cant even get a decent paying job even when you have done that experience gaining helpdesk job. I think doing janitorial work pays much better! Even if i get some better roles it will not make huge difference paywise.

this is my fear, i also sorta want to go into the IT industry, but not sure what im going to do there though.... thats why im gonna do a Bcom and most probably computer science.

apparently the pay in england is better for the IT employees.

anyway, good luck
