2005-07-20 13:59:00 | There are numerous content protection systems and even more speculation on what will be utilised by the new high capacity discs. However until hardware and software/content for these new formats are released we are unable to tell what will be required excluding of course a display device capable of 720p or above to take advantage of the higher resolution. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25GB. Blu-ray Disc Association includes the following companies - Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson. A single-layer HD DVD disc can hold 15GB. Toshiba and NEC are the main companies behind HD DVD.

2005-07-20 20:59:00 | hmmm.....Doubt I could scrounge up 50Gb to burn to disc, and I certainly wouldn't trust a disc with that amount of info... As to what I was referring to, the HD content will only be of use on a high-definition display,so nearly every TV set is rendered useless (hope you Xbox2 and PS3 fans comprehend the implications, you need a 10 thousand dollar TV set that simply aren't on the NZ market) Hmmm. Way back when we were using floppies and CDs first came out, did you say I wouldn't trust data on something that big? And as for TVs being rendered useless, yep. Sooner or later all technology becomes obsolete. Like VCRs. You can keep it but soon there won't be much point as it will be too hard to find a video to play on it. Still, I'm not worrying over which one wins, when it happens is soon enough, meanwhile I'll continue to live with my VCR :p my old style chunky TV and my DVDRW.

2005-07-20 23:20:00 | As for TV's beng rendered useless, all our media is low res,all our tv transmissions are low res and all TV's on the market are low res, Its not so much that they will become unusable (NZ has no roadmap for high definition television signal) but that none will suport the new media, and its like this worldwide with only Ameriaca (as far as I know) pushing the HD angle. | Metla (12) | |
2005-07-21 05:27:00 | High Resolution TVs are available in NZ as well as the rest of the world . They can be purchase for less than $1,000 NZ not the $10,000 plus mark that was suggest in this thread . HD broadcasts are available in the likes of Australia, Canada, USA, Japan, Mexico and across Europe with UK, France, South Korea, Germany and Brazil due to lunch channels during this year and next . The BBC currently produces some television programs in HD . They intend all content to be produced in HD by 2010 .

2005-07-21 05:37:00 | Hmmm..I supose that must be in reference to the LCD TV sets that have come on the market in the last year, Prior to those I cant think of any that are available. And to get one of a size worth viewing....Oh,you can't. We even managed to get swamped in non-hd plasma screens.

2005-07-21 05:44:00 | From what I've read about the LCD HD TVs they won't work apparently. This was referring to USAs HDTV but... | pctek (84) | |
2005-07-21 06:05:00 | Well Melta you could buy a projector with 1280*720 native resolution which would project and image as large as your current projector or is that not big enough. (about $3k NZ) Yes we do get swamped with non HD plasma screens, but we also have HD plasmas with screen sizes normally ranging from 42-65 inches. (all but one under $10K) LCDs are available ranging upto 45 inches. (all but one under $10K) Pricing taken from the website of a nationwide retailer.

2005-07-21 06:12:00 | No need to get testy, The last time I looked at the situation was a year ago,and apart from there now being HD plasma and LCD screens available for under ten grand what has been posted in this thread is as close as I think we can get with the current info. I sure won't be spending tenner on a tv,or even 5, hell not even 3, My TV cost $800 and won't be getting replaced till it dies. Still, If someone wants to spend thousands on a display that will be good for nothing but playing next generation consoles then good on em. And how about a link to the page your getting your prices from?

2005-07-21 07:02:00 | Digital t.v's no matter what form they come in wether they are lcd or plasma or conventional should not be mistaken for HD set's, The only HD set I Know of that's avalible here is the apple cinama displays and a couple of other monitor's. | plod (107) | |
