662730 2008-04-26 04:08:00 I have a Western Digital HD partitioned into 2 - the main is my C: drive while the D: drive is my data drive. Recently I noticed that when I opened my D: root directory it was empty!!!! Great consternation!!!! But, when I accessed an actual folder that I knew to be on the D drive, all the data was there. What's happened to the information that should appear when I open the root directory ie type in d:\ into the address bar??

I am running Win XP Pro on an Intel based Desktop. I also run Norton antivirus, Sygate firewall as well as Spybot and Adaware. And yes I do do regular backups!!

What has happened and how do I repopulate the root directory?

Oh yes, I tried for see what was showing in the directory using DOS but it still appears empty.

662731 2008-04-26 07:26:00 They've all been marked as hidden folders? pctek (84)
662732 2008-04-26 09:22:00 Just type in the file path e.g D:\Data\Pictures\Photos\ or something that points to a file, and then see if anything comes up, if something does come up, then they are hidden. The question is, who hid them? SPARTAN 860 (2618)

What files do you think should appear in the root of D: ?

I would think that D: is not bootable and contains Folders which contain files.

There does not have to be any files in the root on a partition from which you do not boot. There should be a partition table but normally you would not see that anyway.

662734 2008-04-27 00:16:00 Many thanks everyone. Yep they were hidden. Not sure how this has happened as it's only my family who have access to my PC and none are PC literate enough to do this. dinkytoy (13669)
