662751 2008-04-26 02:32:00 I've got a friend running XP home basic on an Acer notebook. When she inserts a new USB device into one of the 4 ports the automatic installation wizard starts up, runs thru the install process and then curiously starts again. If you press "cancel" on the new window the installation doesn't work, however, if you allow the installation wizard to run three times in a row everything is fine.

In a way this is not a "biggy" 'cos eventually everything works but does anyone know why it's happening? It's the first time I've come across it on any XP machine.

662752 2008-04-26 03:19:00 Is she running the laptop, on battery or power? Speedy Gonzales (78)
662753 2008-04-27 01:55:00 Power I think - you know wot people are like, they buy a laptop, plug it in, never really use the battery for six months and then wonder why it never holds its charge. This is a "little old lady" situation so I'll check

Thanks

662754 2008-04-27 22:16:00 If it's a USB hard drive that is running off USB power, it's possible it's not getting enough power to work properly. If it has a USB Y-cable, plug the extra connector into another USB port on the laptop & it should work fine. autechre (266)
662755 2008-04-29 00:22:00 Hi Speedy

Yep, she's running it on power and it's even happening with things like memory sticks - shove a 1 gig one in and go thru install 3 times, stick a 4 gig one in and go thru install 3 times - etc. When I look at the USB serial bus controllers in Device Manager there are multiple entries (ie over 4) for "USB root hubs" and other things
