2008-04-25 04:24:00 | Hi all Installed SP3 this morning. Did a backup and a system restore before, ran it and lo and behold - total chaos:mad: . Could not get past boot screen, not with recovery disks, nothing. Had to reinstall the XP disks. All my stuff is still there on the C:drive, but my desktop is gone. I've tried to reinstall Comodo but it won't allow me because it found a previous one installed. Can't uninstall that one because the option does not exist in either the Start menu or the folder itself. How do you solve this? Needless to say, I won't reinstall SP3 very quickly again - at least not until I find out a bit more what went wrong, etc. sarel

2008-04-25 04:32:00 | and, where do you get the email address file - .wab or something? Sarel

2008-04-25 04:40:00 | You export it from the address book. Thats if you saved it, and want to load it again. If you didnt save/export it first, and you reformatted byebye wab file

2008-04-25 05:00:00 | Just a little unsure by the way you wrote that - did you do a complete format like speedy mentioned or us the XP CD to get it going again ? | wainuitech (129) | |
2008-04-25 05:27:00 | Used XP CD - everything still there in the C:drive, I just have to set it up. But the whole start menu was gone, as well as the desk top - so when I tried to reinstall Comodo it says I have to uninstall the one installed already - and I can't - no startup item or no uninstall function in the Comodo folder. I which folder (I think it's somewhere in Win32) does Windows put the .wab(?) file - so that I can import the addresses again - oh yes I forgot, Outlook Express was gone as well. sarel

A .wab file does not live in the Windows directory as such like win32. You said you made a backup before installing SP3. What software did you use to do this and what did you backup or copy? What media did you backup or copy to? I would think you have not done a format and re-install using the XP CD and just used it to repair but I do not know for a fact. How did you reinstall the XP disks when XP was supplied on ONE CD? These questions are asked to elicit answers from you that may help the PressF1 members to actually help. |

2008-04-25 06:46:00 | No problems loading SP3, BUT I only have done it on a fresh install / Slipstreamed. The Outlook Express address book is located in C:\Documents and Settings\Yourusername\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book You will have to go to Tools/Folder Options/ View tab and select show hidden files and folders, as Application Data is a hidden folder. Note: IF it was Outlook thats a different story as the address book is in the PST file, while not impossible to recover its not the easiest. What you may like to try is restoring the PC back to before you attempted SP3. Since the menu's have disappeared, try it in command prompt mode. Run System Restore in Command Prompt 1. Boot into Safe mode with Command Prompt – Keep Pressing F8 at start-up then with the arrow keys select Safe mode with Command prompt. 2. At the command prompt, type C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe Press Enter. Follow the instructions given to perform the System Restore process Failing that after saving the data, you may need a repair install.
