374278 2005-07-22 08:10:00 Last year I bought a domain name and hosting of the domain from http://www.kiwiwebhost.co.nz/

Today we got our Visa card bill and I noticed that there was a charge from iServe Lower Hutt on the statement for $151.92. The difference from the normal charge would be because every year you have your site the hosting charge will come down.

I knew that my domain name and web hosting was up for renewal early this month and expected an invoice for the renewal if I wanted to do so. Then I phoned my bank and found another charge went out today for $44.94 from iServe as well.

I have now checked with the hosting company above and found that they used the details from our Visa card to renew the hosting and domain name without my express approval for another year. They say that they will refund the money and the site was taken down within minutes of my phone call.

If you check www.custompc.co.nz (http://www.custompc.co.nz/) you will find no web site at that address.

Hoping you don't think this is spamming an address!

Unlike a certain person here I have never put a link to my web site into PressF1 until now. No problems now I feel as it is not there any more. :-)

My point is that these people took money for a renewal which I certainly did not authorise. I expected an invoice and then I would pay it or not as the case may be.

I have never needed support and would use them again as a hosting company. In fact I am still using them for two other domain names.

Will be watching my Visa Card very carefully

374279 2005-07-22 09:08:00 ... So what!?

Kiwi Web Host as far as I'm aware is one of the best hosting company there is in New Zealand price and quality wise.

As always "life is not fair"; not everything will be done to your way.

So what??? They took money out of his Visa without asking first. So you'd be happy if some shop you'd dealt with just happened a year later to charge your visa X$ and send you a new whatever peice of hardware cause they assumed you'd want it?
Same thing. Maybe Kiwi Host were one of the best but that just knocked a few points off their reputation in my opinion. Not on at all.

What you've described is a completely different scenario.

If that is what you are all thinking, then maybe you should all leave the likes of Telecom AND Telstra... they charge one month ahead. All they do is send you the invoice AFTER they've taken the money off you.

Kiwi Web Hosts do exactly the same. Send invoice after taking money off you. To offer you a refund is extremely kind of him

[P.S. Has anyone else noticed Elephant's attack on Metla... when will you get over it!]

374282 2005-07-22 11:09:00 They send out an email notifing of the charge, giving you a few days grace if you dont wish to continue the service, they then send a second email after the transaction.

They send the mail to the contact address as set by the account holder in the site control panel, If the email is bounced back then they ring the account holder.

For one of my sites they went as far as ringing my old boy and asking him to pass on the message.

Now either they made a mistake or the account holder is at fault, either way it shouldn't detract from the company as they do not just swipe money with no heads up.

374283 2005-07-22 11:12:00 I have a few subscriptions that get charged to my account annually without prior notice..The orignal payment stated that it would be charged automaticly unless notified..Maybe same situation???? plod (107)
374284 2005-07-22 11:14:00 From where I sit it's not a different scenario... most people have an ongoing contract with the likes of Telecom and Telstra- they expect to be billed monthly ad infinitum.

If the web hosting charge was for a year in advance then the client should have been given the option to renew before his credit card was debited.... not only polite, but good business practice I think!

You might, but as far as I'm aware, most regular customers like myself are not subject to a 'ongoing contract' to be billed before we receive the invoices.

374286 2005-07-22 13:47:00 I'm with Kiwiweb host. As per Met's, I receive and email about a month in advance, then another shortly before and a confirmation one. The first and second give me the chance to opt out, change the payment method or notify of change of requirements.

I've not had a problem with them, so I imagine someone has cocked up.

If it's their fault, ask for your site to be reinstated, with the start up fee waved.
