373987 2005-07-20 22:30:00 What do you reckon would be a reasonable price for a second hand laptop running win 95 and has small hd and ram (i want to buy it off my best friend)

Also where could i get a laptop for a 12 kids budget price aka $200-$500 (i will be saving for a while)

Also can laptops be upgraded?
techiekid (7219)
373988 2005-07-20 22:34:00 trademe for laptop's, yes they can be upgraded most of the time, ram, hdd.
I wouldn't pay much at all, the battery is probably stuffed and a new one will cost more then the latop is worth.....

373989 2005-07-20 23:17:00 You can buy IBM Thinkpads with 1.2GHz CPUs and all the fruit including W2K OS or COA for less than $600 from ex-lease disposal sources (all with good batteries), and PIII 700/800 models are down well below $400, so an ancient laptop running W95 is probably in the sub $100 bracket. The screen might be a passive matrix type too, not TFT so image quality might not be great.

Unless desperate, I'd look elsewhere and keep the friendship alive. That is probably worth a lot more than the laptop.

Cheers

373990 2005-07-20 23:22:00 um....yeah, I would also value that Laptop as near worthless.

Seems a lot of people get ripped off left right and centre when it comes to laptops.

Yes, your right. But note that it is an auction and it doesn't close for bids until next Tuesday. Already the price is $500+

It's bound to hit the $700 to $850 mark.

yes but the spec's were higher then what billy t mentioned, or would you like me to search trademe for exact model number and price for you...
Spend a bit of time and you will find the one you are after, with a buy now price :p

373995 2005-07-21 01:01:00 If you don't want to get into a bidding war on Trade Me, you want an assurance that your purchase is legitimate and you would like some sort of warranty come-back if you find it has a terminal fault within a few days of purchase,
try Here (www.rcn.co.nz).

You will have to phone them to establish contact, they are not a web shop so you have to go there to view etc but they have an enormous range of ex-lease equipment and new stock comes in regularly. If you can get on their email list you will get regular information about specials etc.

373996 2005-07-21 01:35:00 I've paid $20-$40 for Toshiba laptops of W95 class: 512 MB disk, 100-120 MHz Pentium, 32 MB ram, no CD. I paid $120 for a Compaq with 96MB, 6 GB disk, 233P, and Cd drive. It had the original W98 recovery CD.

None had a working battery.

Those were prices at a "live" auction. W95 laptops are in the paperweight class now. That Compaq runs Linux well. The Toshibas are just too small these days.
