373644 2005-07-19 22:51:00 or linux on a mac

Too late. PPC versions of various linux distros have been out for ages

or mac os on a win machine.

Ever heard of Rosetta?

373645 2005-07-19 22:51:00 You have always been able to install linux on a mac and windows, although windows has been under heavy imulation. You won't be able to install OS X on a windows machine simply, it will be needed to be hacked, which you can do now. plod (107)

I don't think the PPC platform held back Mac sales any, so changing to Intel will not help all that much. But then, Mac sales seem to be doing quite well anyway.

If Microsoft is afraid of anything, it is open source - mostly Linux. Their FUD campaigns against Linux are long-standing and ongoing, and they have thrown a large amount of money into it. Balmer is even speaking with a slight open source accent these days, trying to be one of the boys. It ain't going to work.

I can't see why anyone who spends money on a Mac would be bothered to install Windows on the same machine. People who go to Mac are fleeing from Windows, but don't want the hard work and uncertainty associated with Linux. MacOSX is also the prettiest, coolest, styliest thing since the last MacOS incarnation. So for similar reasons, Mac users won't really bother with Linux.

373650 2005-07-20 04:24:00 MS could care less if you use a Mac, if you can install windows on it, so much the better from a MS point of view, they still get paid.

373651 2005-07-20 04:33:00 And it makes zero sence to install Windows on a Mac anyhow, they only thing Mac have to market is an alternative OS,The hardware has been lagging for years and once the switch is made to Intel gear you will still be able to buy a system of the same specs for less from any corner computer store....

I think its all a non-issue, Now if they released OSX as standalone software there would be a market for it, though I doubt they could offer a driver layer that would come anywhere close to MS (either in amount or compatability, stability),and once the unwashed masses got hold of it they would corrupt it just as they currently do with XP......

Hmm probably sales won't boom much unless Mac prices come down a lot. And I don't expect to see Apple reducing its prices much, they aren't into the mainstream market.

Remember that M$ also sells Office for the Mac and Virtual PC (yep with a Windows license too). They wouldn't miss out on much.

Windows NT available for the Mac at one stage.
Linux has always been available for the Mac (Debian springs to mind).

Mac OS X on any old Windows PC probably won't be a real goer. They'll stick some sort of ROM control on Mac Motherboards and then you have driver support... Part of Mac OS X working so well has to do with Apple controlling the core hardware. But maybe Apple will release a live CD of OS X to get people to buy their hardware.

It will be interesting though and expect to see a hackers release of OS X for non-Apple x86 PCs surfacing
