663539 2008-04-28 11:30:00 I've just signed up with Xnet from xtra largely on the basis of positive comments from sites like this . Everything went nice and smoothly until I tried youtube - jerky videos which was a first for me . Then I tried a couple of downloads and was shocked to see I was getting around 10kps! A file that would take under 10 minutes with xtra is now taking an hour and a half!

Local speed tests show around 2400kbps for NZ traffic so I guess my hardware setup and line connection are ok . But an international speed test shows between 98 - 150 kps .

What's going on here? Is Xnet always like this? Or is there just something going on this evening? I certainly won't be staying with them if these speeds don't improve dramatically .

Thanks,
Mark

663540 2008-04-28 12:09:00 It's a known issue with international bandwidth affecting some customers, due to an unexpectedly large number of new signups. They say there are plans in the works to fix this, although they haven't said what or when this will be implemented.

I'd say stick with them, other than this recent blip they have been outstanding .

663541 2008-04-28 12:13:00 My service has been crap for a couple of months, Sent them an email asking them to outline how and when it will be sorted.

No reply yet, Depending on what they have to say I'm going to cancel, I disagree with paying for rubbish, I'd rather go without and put the money to better use.

663542 2008-04-28 13:33:00 youtube has been cr*p lately, but downloads from USA in general have been fast... mostlu from sourceforge and ms...

I have been getting repeated errors on starting vista... the internet connection drops out and I have to delete my network card to fix it...
Strange, never happened on xtra but every 2 days on xnet... I'll phone them one day when I get more info on it...

663543 2008-04-28 14:36:00 I was wondering how long it would take for a thread about Xnet’s slow international speeds to show up here on PressF1….

As there is a BIG 24 page thread (www.geekzone.co.nz) on this over at the Xnet forum at Geekzone (www.geekzone.co.nz)

The thread: from page 1 Xnet International Issue (www.geekzone.co.nz)

Some useful info on this on page 21: www.geekzone.co.nz from freitasm.

663544 2008-04-28 19:30:00 Just checked out the early morning speed - got one international download reported at 1.31Mbps and just got an LA server reported at 2.7Mbps! So it's not a hardware or a line issue. Got to be peak throttling or capacity problem. Now just waiting to hear what Xnet have to say. kram (13676)

David Lange once characterised the financial markets as “reef fish”, rapidly turning en masse this way and that . The same can be said for broadband subscribers wanting more .

Xnet will probably have their International bandwidth sorted just as the reef fish have joined the next small ISP to be brought to its knees by an influx of customers all chasing the "best deal" .

Maybe the best option is to be with the ISP that was the previous flavour of the month as they'll probably have plenty of spare capacity :)

663546 2008-04-28 21:45:00 Maybe the option is for the ISP to provide the service they are being paid for? Metla (12)

Don't assume everyone has the same motivations. I didn't sign up to Xnet because I "wanted more" but because I was not happy with some other Telecom initiatives. What I did not expect was a seriously degraded service offering like this. I'm not certain what to do next....

Thanks for this positive comment, it's great to get some history from a long-term customer. This blip looks like its be ongoing for a couple of months now, how long would you suggest I hang on before looking for alternatives?
