663057 2008-04-27 07:39:00 Master 12 has a computer and wants to connect to the internet via my broadband...is it as simple as that, I'm sure there's more to it than that but can't convince him otherwise.

i have win 98 SE and he has XP in his room.
He wants to take the internet cable out of my pc and put it into his pc which we would also need an extension lead for it to reach round to his room..

I don't know what to do
:thanks

663058 2008-04-27 07:42:00 His computer instructions say that Internet ready if you are using a broadband router.... Winnie (6405)
663059 2008-04-27 07:44:00 How many ethernet ports are there remaining on your router?

It would be better to buy a longer cable and run that from the router to the WinXP PC. and keep the cable in yours.

Plug all cables in = internet immediately. Most probably the case for XP but not sure about 98 :)

So unfortunately he's right :)

663060 2008-04-27 07:48:00 he can take the cable right out of your computer and into his, but that would be rather inconvenient for you wouldn't it?

Check how many ports (how many computers your current modem (router) can connect) , these are the "RJ45" ports (they are the big ones, not like the small one that goes into the line) on the back of your modem/router device. If you have more than 1 more, just go and buy another 'Ethernet' cable long enough to go from there to Master 12's PC.

If it doesn't have enough ports, and you would like for both computers to get the internet simultaneously, you will have to get a router, can be wired or wireless, up to you. Wireless costs more and doesn't work as good/fast as wired but it is simply easier.

663062 2008-04-27 08:00:00 The router has ethernet which I'm suing , it also has a USB there too which no-one is using...could he use that or best to stick to the ethernet and we take turns? Winnie (6405)
663063 2008-04-27 08:07:00 Is the router beside any of the two computers?

If so you can use the USB (from what I've heard it's not as reliable as ethernet but it's usable). USB extension cables are expensive.

You'll probably need to upgrade to at least Windows 2000 (and buy a USB 2.0 PCI card) to get full speed though USB if you use it. Windows 98 only supports USB 1.0 and 1.1 IIRC.]

If it's beside your son's PC put him through USB as it's likely he has USB 2.0 ports given he's running XP.

663064 2008-04-27 08:33:00 Yep, don't use USB extension ports. If you want to stick with that particular router (it is the cheapest option as long as your overall net usage isn't very particularly demanding eg. gaming) then put the modem/router into 'Master 12''s room, plug via USB into his computer (you do not want to extend USB, it is very unreliable and expensive too) using a standard usb A to B cable (which I believe will have been provided with that modem) to plug into his computer. Get an ethernet cable to take from the RJ45 port there right into your computer. You can get cables you will be fine with any length under 100 metres, try and find a size that is close enough to an exact fit (or just a little bit of slack).

Just a side note, do not extend the cable that goes from the modem into your filter to the phone line, that can adversely effect your connection.

If you didn't want to move the modem/router to his room then you can try and see if it will work out for you to usb the USB cable into your computer, but I suggest testing that and seeing if you are happy with your internet performance with the USB (provided you can get it to work with Win98) as you may be in for a shock depending on how old your hardware is.

Of course there is still the option to get a Wired/Wireless router to sort it all out with ease.

well it CAN ......but it most likely wouldn't ..........i've seen people runnign extensions on their phone cable heaps of times and usually it has little or no effect.....otherwise the advice about moving the router to the boys room .....getting him to plug in thru usb and running an extension ethernet to your pc is excellent.........extension ethernet cable is VERY cheap if you dont go to somewehre like dicksmiths to buy it.......goto a 'real' computer shop where they BUILD computers they'll make up a cable for you and probably charge about $0.50c per meter or thereabouts......

663066 2008-04-27 10:23:00 Yeh my hardware is old....am saving for a lap top at this stage.
Master 12 got his XP by saving hard. and buying a good reliable second hand one.

I would prefer the router stay in the office, so shall I get an extension ethernet cable and run it from the router to his computer? it's 4 meters from my pc to his.
