662894 2008-04-26 22:58:00 Hi
I am kind of confused about GPU's as my card (www.playtech.co.nz) that i got 3-4 months ago some people have been saying that it wont run crysis well!! i spent $280 on this card and i find it amazing that it is 850mhz core clock(OCed edition) 512mb 1400mhz GDDR4 dual dvi, directX10 Card can not run crysis well, Im confused about GPUs as my 850mhz hd2600xt is not as good as a newer chipset with a slower clock!! Is it not like cpu's where a 2ghz sempron is the same as a 2ghz athlon pretty much. its the core clock and ram speed and type that matters doesnt it? Does it really matter so much about what type of GPU? if its the same core clock it should be the same?

Can someone please tell me whats the difference

Thanks

662895 2008-04-27 00:47:00 It all depends on the GPU, number of transistors, pipelines, processors etc ....all that micro-jumbos I don't understand. Even if you downclocked an 8800GTX's core speed to half of your 2600XT (425MHz), it will still be a significantly better card.

There are a couple of really good articles that tell you about how this all happens, but I don't know where to find them. Maybe somebody else here does?

662896 2008-04-27 03:29:00 The 2600XT may have a high clock but as qazwsxokmijn said you have to factor in the transisitors/ROPs/pipelines etc. Your card may be at 800MHz but my 8800GT at 700MHz will still beat it 2.5:1 :D (and I only get 35FPS in Crysis).

Crysis is a horribly optimized game anyway. It was just badly done and biased against ATi GPU's (being sponsored by nVidia and all, same thing happened with Half-Life 2 in the beginning).

662897 2008-04-27 06:21:00 Unfortunately a 2600XT performs only "about" the same as a 8600GTS, better in some games worse in others.

You can prob run Crysis ok at 1280x1024 with medium settings.

If using XP and DX9, use ini tweaks, you can gain you up to 20% FPS with little loss of IQ. Tweaks seem less effective in Vista.

Without talking architecture's, the best way to shop for a new GPU is straight out performance results, clock rates are pointless to compare across different architectures.

662898 2008-04-27 06:46:00 Just do a google on graphic card benchmarks and also
go to wikipedia Comparison of ATI graphics processing units article for some info as well.

Might be pushing it a bit . The 7900GS performs on par with a 8600GTS .
The 2600XT is more like a 7600GS .

662900 2008-04-27 10:56:00 $280 in the grand scheme of things isn't that much for a video card, and what does play crysis well? I've never heard that much about whether crysis is actually a good game or not... all I've heard about is it's stupid running specs.

I saw a video where a guy had 2x 9900GX2's (ie: quad-sli) and it was still getting skippy. So who cares about it anyway? If your comp works well 99% of the time, I'm sure you can learn to live with that 1%.

662901 2008-04-27 11:25:00 With my 8800GT and 2GB RAM and 3.2GHz E6750 I can play Crysis at all settings Very High DX10 1024x768 no AA/AF, all about 30 FPS except for long-shot and ocean views where it will crawl to 9-14 FPS. qazwsxokmijn (102)
662902 2008-04-27 20:21:00 Whatever made you think a $200 vid card would run a program that requires a $1000 card?

And before you run out and buy a $1000 card, will your cpu be up to it's task?

662903 2008-04-27 23:18:00 I had this card in my previous rig (upgraded from an X800XT) and I found it ran worse than my previous card. It's a bargain for someone looking to do some low end gaming, but I tried to run crysis and it lagged like mad even on the menu.

System specs were:
AMD Athlon 3200+ (2.2ghz)
Asus A7N8X-E deluxe motherboard
1gb (2x512) PC3200 (400mhz) DDR RAM
and of course the 2600XT

I promptly sold the new card to a friend and put my old X800XT back in.
