376043 2005-07-27 09:16:00 what did you think? are deisels cheaper to run?

according to the show they are but notice they skipped over a few things...

the rego costs more

and the biggy for most deisels on the road (non-HT) is the maintence, which can be double compared to a petrol.

also i'm not sure if they factored in that most deisels are a lot bigger than their petrol counterpart.

consumer mag recond deisels cost MORE unless you where doing high k's.

376044 2005-07-27 09:39:00 4.2L petral cruiser is much more expensive to run then a 4L diesel cruiser...
It depends what you are comparing them to...

376045 2005-07-27 10:11:00 Most diesels appear to be big heavy 4 wheel drives. I'm sure one those, like a Landcruiser, is going to be more greedy than a computer controlled lean-burning 2 litre petrol. Then when you consider that the majority of these big 4x4s are used to take the kids to school, seems a bit of a waste of fuel.

But what about the use of home grown vegetable oil as a diesel fuel? It has been talked about since the early 80s.

376046 2005-07-27 10:16:00 I never even noticed the fuel cost for the deisel I recently sold, Now Im having to budget for fuel in the car I replaced it with and restrict how much driving I do.

:annoyed: :annoyed: :annoyed: :annoyed:

376047 2005-07-27 10:22:00 I actually saw a article in the hutt news about a month ago about veg oil, some guy here tring to market the conversions..
When in the uk a couple of years back there was a big stink about it then, you know how the goverment is missing out on taxes, there seems to be a bit of a blackmarket trade going on over there at the moment, the chippie shops are loving it, being paid to have there waste oil taken away instead of paying for it to be taken
The bro in the uk currently runs a new ford focus diesel, he say's it absolutely kicks ass over the petrol variant..
Untill we start getting euro diesels as main sream cars, you will only really see the big4x4 here, Some euro diesels have service intervals of 10000km which is almost as good as most petrol cars these days.
Me personaly am waiting till i can aford one of those toyota hybrids.

376048 2005-07-27 10:30:00 dunno terry, there are a lot of deisel cars around 2-2.5 litre motors. if the big 4x4 had a petrol it proberly would be a 3l, 4l 6cyl or v8 :)

metla you have a good point. a lot of people with deisels only think of the fuel cost. it looks to be cheaper to run. well if wind the clock back and don't do any maintainence it is ;)

i forgot to mention it also depends on how you drive. deisels are not fast. drive them fast and it will hurt. i know contractors who got sick of deisels because they kept blowing motors up all the time.

bios deisel.......aussie has it in some places. no idea if anyone will bring it out here. it wouldn't be to good in the south island as it goes solid in cold weather more easly than normal deisel. some people just use cleaned used cooking oil. tho its better if you convert it. you can make high grade bio deisel at home if you wish. its also quite good at cleaning out the rubbish in the fuel system, unfortunatly it also cleans out old seals so don't use it on old vechiles ;)

376049 2005-07-27 10:31:00 That's right plod.

To be fair the program did start off with the guy driving a European diesel sedan, but then the program jumped to the guy with the big 4x4.

A modern diesel is going to be much better, and probably the smoke emissions are less too.

376050 2005-07-27 10:33:00 plod....i under stand the reason we don't get many euro deisels here is our ****ty deisel is not good for them. tweak'e (69)
376051 2005-07-27 10:34:00 so probably a good time to find a unemployed meth cook to start converting the bio diesel, can't wait for the police raids, surely this would be the same as growing your own tobacco for supply? :p plod (107)
376052 2005-07-27 10:36:00 actually terry you just made me think of what tv3 missed, a lot of the new deisels have particulate filterson them, kinda like the deisel ver of a cat converter.

btw that smoky deisel they showed on tv3 was STUFFED. even old deisels don't smoke that bad.
