375668 2005-07-26 11:22:00 I enter the Nescafe Formula 1 contest on the internet. Each time there is a F1 race on Bob McMurry writes four question about the Country/Track on F1 racing. The last race was in Hockemheim Germany. One of the questions he asked was, How many Formula 1 drivers has Germany produced up to the end of 2004? and he gave you 4 choices 20,30,40,50 I went here
www.f1db.com and if you count up there are 52 so I put down 50. wrong it was 40.
I sent an email to Nescafe and they contacted Bob McMurry and his reply was.

A Grand Prix driver to me is one who has taken part in a Grand Prix not just
driven a Grand Prix car. Anybody can do that with money to buy an old car.
The list in the website is wrong in that it includes drivers who have not
taken part in a Grand Prix.
As an example take Michael Bartels. The website list says that he drove in
1991 in 1 GP.
In actual fact he attempted to qualify for four Grand Prix in 1991 (Germany,
Hungary, Italy and Spain) and did not qualify for any of them. He was
driving a Lotus Judd and was spectacularly unsuccessful!
Therefore he was NOT a Grand Prix driver and is not classed as one in my
list.
This is but one example but I have spotted at least six more on first look.
So, 40 German GRAND PRIX DRIVERS is right. Not entrants but drivers.
I welcome the chance for your customer to debate the subject with me if he
so desires.

What do you think.

375670 2005-07-26 11:39:00 Bob suffer's badley from tall poppy syndrome, as a keen follower of the F1 having to put up with his crap every sunday night is painfull...
He seem's to have the atitude of when Ferarri are winning they must be cheating, me I'm a huge Shumacher fan as also a huge aussie cricket fan, but thats a different story, I enjoy watching pure skill and devotion to a sport. The sooner Bob leaves TVNZ for the new A1 racing league he is overseeing the better :2cents:

375671 2005-07-28 06:00:00 I have to say I like the information Bob gives nights there is F1 Racing, its very interesting some time. :2cents: stu161204 (123)
375672 2005-07-28 11:09:00 Hi Trevor

It depends on the exact wording of the question and how you interpret it. IMO a formula 1 "driver" should include those who participate in the pre-race qualifying. Whereas a formula 1 "race driver" would only include those who competed in the race. But Bob makes the rules so there isn't much you can do about it.

Interesting facts : Mika Hakkinen drove the same car as Michal Bartels in the 1991 Italian grand prix and finished a creditable 14th (but it wasn't noteworthy given it was 3rd to last across the line) from a starting position of 25th - compared to Michael Schumacher who started 7th and finished 5th. Stats here (www.f1db.com).

375673 2005-07-28 11:16:00 Thats like saying everyone who makes it to the bench is an all black, yet they don't go down as an All Black unless they take the feild.... Metla (12)
375674 2005-07-28 11:23:00 If they're good enough to be on the bench then they are worthy of the title, aren't they? Like I said, depends on the wording.....

Late Edit : consider the difference between "pulling on the black shirt" and "earning a test cap" - both are All Blacks, except one didn't play that day - much like the Norm Hewitt syndrome (or would the NHS better describe getting drunk, falling through a window and then blubbing on national TV?)

375675 2005-07-28 11:29:00 Yes Andrew you make a good point. If he had of said race drivers instead of drivers then thats an entirely differant question. Thanks for the input.
