i'm from austria and got some questions about new zealand, because i maybe want to emigrate from austria. i've read a bit about NZ but i didn't find good information about taxes and prices there. e.g. i can live here with about ~1400 euros/month quite good (i think that's about 2500 NZ $), but the taxes here are horrible (2150 euro brutto, 1400 netto, so the state gets ~35% of my cash ...)
i searched for jobs in NZ with seek.co.nz and found jobs with ~60.000 NZ Dollar yearly payment (that would be ~2800 euros).
how is the situation in NZ? (taxes, rent for a flat, prices for daily goods)

thx

375558 2005-07-26 10:10:00 Most probably your best line of approach initially is through New Zealand Immigration Department.

375559 2005-07-26 10:15:00 60,000 per year is a good job.

rent:
about $200 - $300 for a two bedroom house depending on what part of NZ.

about $45 per month for a phone line.

about $80-$150 per month for power.

car parking in a big city can be about $10 per day.

for infomation on tax check out www.ird.govt.nz

375560 2005-07-26 10:17:00 The taxes in NZ are similar, about 33% income tax.We also have GST tax of 12.5% on anything you buy including petrol and food, so you need to look also at the cost of living. If you get a job for $60,000.00 per year that's 'above average' wage for New Zealand.

Rents are expensive in the larger cities like Auckland and Wellington unless you live on the edge of the city (20-30KM out from the center). I'm not sure, but in Auckland maybe $300-350 for a medium house, or maybe $100-150 for a room in a house/flat.

375561 2005-07-26 10:36:00 Your problem is going to be to actually get, and stay in a job. English language skills are very important in above-average payable job applicants.

Look at seek.co.nz, nzherald.co.nz and a few others for companies that advertise online employment. Try drake.co.nz too.

It would also be a lot easier for locals to help you if you do your currency convertor sums before you talk money. And then talk in NZ$'s... why should we do the sums for you?

375564 2005-07-26 21:17:00 It may be wise for you to consider Australia, especially since so many Kiwis leave NZ to live over there!

Best idea, as stated above, is to come over for a visit.

As we may be about to change governments, taxes would then go down (so they say). However their money has to come from somewhere so they will cut public services even more.
Most work is available in the bigger cities and Auckland is the biggest. A 1 bedroom flat anywhere in Auckland would cost $200 NZ. A 3 bedroom house will vary between $270 - $500 depending on whether you live in a "nice" area or not.
Parking is expensive in town, traffic is a joke.
Living in the smaller areas is OK if you have trade or a medical career.
Overseas quals are often not good enough though and you would be expected to get "NZ" quals, especially in the medical field.
Go to Aussie....

article of interest:

CANBERRA - Is the great Kiwi OE stealing our men? With far more 30-something women than men, this is not a good time to be a single woman looking for a mate in the Antipodes.

Nor is the news good for governments on either side of the Tasman, increasingly chewing their nails as their economies outstrip the supply of skills needed to feed them.

And our young, single men continue to vanish at a gathering pace, heading overseas and never returning.

According to Australian demographer Bernard Salt, that's already resulted in an increasingly matriarchal New Zealand culture and will continue to change everything from households to consumption patterns.

It will also get worse as larger, richer, skill-hungry countries in the Northern Hemisphere target bright young men trained and educated at the expense of New Zealand and Australian taxpayers.

In a new study of transtasman populations, Mr Salt, a partner in KPMG's risk advisory services practice and one of Australia's best-known demographers, warns of a growing "man drought".

In 1991 there were 8000 more 30-something women than men in New Zealand. By last year this had soared to a surplus of 24,000 women.

"If you are a 34-year-old heterosexual woman in New Zealand you have as much chance of finding a male partner your own age as does an 85-year-old woman," Salt said. "This aligns precisely with what's happening in Australia.
