375374 2005-07-26 01:54:00 There is a thread in pressf1 by bartsdadhomer about a trojan that he failed to defeat with the usual barrage of "tools". He only managed to kill it by trying yet another tool. In total there seemed like 10 tools that failed to find and kill the darn thing. Ten tools sounds like a great effort to go through to clean a machine, and I wonder how many PC users out there would manage this feat?

But the horrible thing is, he only detected the thing because it was diverting to a porn site when a user was filling out a web form. If it wasn't diverting the site, it seems it would never have been detected.

This article (www.theregister.co.uk) from the Register reports that up to 8% of all outbound traffic from internetted machines are spyware transmissions - this sounds too amazing to be true. The spyware are becoming more and more stealthy in their transmissions too, and spyware now accounts for 20% of web-based threats. And even the venerable CoolWebSearch now uses a newly developed root-kit architecture. Eek!

Keep in mind that the report was compiled by a company that ells anti-spyware tools. But still...

375376 2005-07-26 01:58:00 That is why I run "ProcessGuard" from www.diamondcs.com.au. Only processes I allow and know about are allowed to run. KiwiTT_NZ (233)
375377 2005-07-26 02:48:00 KiwiTT, that program looks pretty cool. I might see about giving it a spin sometime soon :) Chilling_Silence (9)
375378 2005-07-26 03:54:00 I notice the latest version of ZoneAlarm Pro (version 6) firewall now has a realtime spyware detection thingy built into it. Will give it a trial. Cptn Hotshot (3904)
375379 2005-07-26 04:34:00 Yeah, see, I would rather a Firewall is a Firewall and does just that: Blocks stuff

I would rather an AV Program that does one thing and does it well: Anti-Virus
Rather than trying to be a jack of all trades...

Still, I'll add that to a list of programs to give a try :)

375382 2005-07-26 04:51:00 Doesn't ProcessGuard stop the installation of viruses, trojans, adware, spyware etc? Would you need the other malware tools if you have ProcessGuard? vinref (6194)
375383 2005-07-26 04:57:00 Vinref. Yes, it does. So a firewall and processguard is all you would need. However, having the other layers, saves you having to answer no to all those attacks.

Also, I am a bit of a belt and braces guy, just to be sure.
