375997 2005-07-28 06:53:00 My wife's a secondary school teacher and has confiscated a few phones. The kids KNOW they are to have them off (they are allowed them at her school, just not use them in class - no different to when I am at business meetings or at a conference, really just etiquette), and they KNOW the penalty - no phone for a week.

There have been a few incidents when the kids have tried bullying or hard nose tactics over this - especially on a Friday (no phone for the weekend OMG how are they going to handle that??!) - however she is a tough cookie, and grandstanding with her doesn't wash. I'm scared of her lol.

375998 2005-07-28 07:01:00 In the real world, employers aren't very understanding about cellphones and texting at work. Do it in your own time. That is what my work's rule is, no personal cellphones permitted in the work area. You check for any messages and send text messages in your breaks. Works well and noone complains about it (or has died from cellphone withdrawal symptoms :p ) Jen (38)
375999 2005-07-28 07:52:00 Indeed, same at my work.

Although that said, I normally have lunch at my desk (too lazy to venture outside) so I normally just sit and browse the web and check messages etc.

I fully agree, off during class/exams etc, but cant vouch for a week-long withdrawl.

That said the kid has to be either addicted and in need of 'time-out' from a cellphone as it were, or simply a little brat with disregard for law, so I totally agree with where Billy T is coming from with this.

Like mentioned, txt bullying, isnt soley limited to school-time however (Sadly there are people in this world like that).

Im curious:
Why does a student need a cellphone on and on a non-vibration only mode during class? Better still, does it even need to be on at all?

Im just failing to see any reasons.....

376000 2005-07-28 07:53:00 Sounds to me like Billy T is on a school board and see's more than enough of heads + tails.Poop. More than a qualified teacher? I don't think so. Greg (193)
376001 2005-07-28 08:41:00 Poop . More than a qualified teacher? I don't think so .

You are venturing way beyond your knowledge and experiential limits again Greg .

Teachers see one end of the problem, My colleagues and I see the other . They have to exercise daily discipline, we see the big picture and do the hard decision making . We see the damage that the teachers don't, read the counsellor's reports, see the demeanour and attitude of the offenders, hear their explanations, excuses and justifications and above all, we read the victim reports . Some are sad enough to make you weep . You cannot believe how malicious, vicious and downright cruel kids can be, especially the girls .

I say again, if it was your child that was harmed you'd be up in arms and demanding that the school do something, preferably involving boiling oil . However, from the tenor of your comments I suspect that if your child was the offender you'd be moving heaven and earth to try and show that he/she is a poor misunderstood waif who was only joking and the victim has no sense of humour .

I've seen enough bleeding-heart parents whimpering about their poor misunderstood little genius to last me a lifetime . One parent was so pathetic that the misunderstood little genius actually got embarrassed and told them to shut up, he'd speak for himself! He did, and took it on the chin, which saved his sorry arse and he lived another day .

If you have experience in this area, tell us about it and then we can take you seriously, otherwise go play in the traffic .

It's a tough world out there for teachers, and cellphones are an unnecessary addition to their problems .

376003 2005-07-28 10:10:00 Hi,
As someone who retired from teaching for 40 + years last year (but who still does relieving teaching), I thought you might be interested in my attitude to cellphones in class.

If a student is texting in class, and I catch them, then I must confiscate the cellphone - standard school policy. However, if a cellphone falls out of their bag and I see it, or if they have it in their hand around the school, I say to them, "Put that away. If I see it again I will notice it. If I notice it, then I will have to take it off you." I say that with a smile on my face and go on my way. But, if I do see the phone again, I sigh, "Oh dear, now I have noticed it, you will have to hand it over". Never any need for a confrontation and they sheepishly hand it over every time. I think it is all in how you approach the problem.

Recently, at the end of a day, I was coming out of a classroom and I heard one girl say to another, ''Tell her I would send her a text but my cellphone is out of money". I said, "Try talking to her - it's free!"

Cheers,

Jim

376006 2005-07-28 11:32:00 Which is a valid argument for while the kids should be able to get their confiscated phones back at the end of the day, but again, there's no reason why they should need to use them in class time .

The confiscate-for-an-entire-week thing seems a bit draconian .

just for the record, were not talking about primary school age kids, im more on about the high school students . but still it shouldnt be used in class, and the entire week confiscation is aload of rubbish and many of you agree, as i have been reading over this thread .

i only take the phone to school because i drive the car, eg if it breaks down etc

I sympathise with Prescott . Damn schools are always over-exercising their rights . I can't see what's wrong with using the phone during breaks - it's part of youth culture these days . Probably some jumped-up idiot of a head teacher can't adapt with the times and wants to deprive the youngsters of stuff he never had as a kid .

exactly the case here, a certian new principal doesnt seem to like the ways of the young .

That is what my work's rule is, no personal cellphones permitted in the work area . You check for any messages and send text messages in your breaks . Works well and noone complains about it (or has died from cellphone withdrawal symptoms :p )

it should be like this at school, and i want this to happen at my school too .

basicly, by the time you actually get a phone you should know how to use it responsibly, just like the internet . and know that you shouldnt use it in class .

the BOT has probably brought this into action, and knowing them they wont budge :(

gutted :annoyed:
