375987 2005-07-28 05:08:00 At my high school 5 - 12 strokes were administered by the Rector or Deputy Rector and only for serious offences - eg. theft. Above 6 strokes would be administered in two batches, a few days apart. Didn't want the boys to pass out. :D.

Heck, at my school the teacher pretty much had the right to cane you for anything. I remember one occaison where the teacher (he-with-a-love-of-caning) accused one boy (who was later a prefect and in no way a troublemaker) of speaking when the tecaher had told everyone to be quiet. The kid was in fact innocent of the crime but went up and was caned on the spot. This kind of thing happened with this teacher fairly regularly until he had his caning license revoked, as it were.

Caning was a common response to classroom bad behaviour - the crime didn't need to be anything as serious as theft.

375988 2005-07-28 05:11:00 Winston..TY for the insight...

The only vision of UK-type schools that we have here in the states is from movies like Oliver Twist..and that doesn't look nice for the students.

I wonder though..are your schools as we see in the movies like "To Sir, With Love" or not? Gads..I am dating myself again!

Geez no. Caning aside (all those years ago) I wouldn't have called our schools back then (70s and 80s), UK-like.

But then, we never had a problem with guns in schools either ......

375989 2005-07-28 05:14:00 If you have it in your bag your whole bag goes out the window. Which is fair enough.

I suggest you fill your bag with water balloons, throw in an old clunker cellphone and make sure someone rings it ....

Same here. My point was that higher levels of strokes were reserved for really bad stuff. But I know that in some Catholic schools, the rod was not spared at all.

Nice plan. I guess I should have mentioned that they'll usually send you out of the room as well.

375996 2005-07-28 06:45:00 Sounds to me like Billy T is on a school board and see's more than enough of heads + tails .

I am more than on a Board, I Chair the Board, and under this peculiar system of school management the buck stops at me, hence my aversion to those who pontificate about students' rights to buck the system when they don't have to face the parents of kids who have suffered at the hands of abusers .

I have no problem facing the parents of the guilty parties, it is very often their failure, not their child's, for lack of clearly defined boundaries as the child grew up, though I do empathise with parents who have done everything right and are beside themselves with guilt and shame about their child's wilful behaviour . My heart goes out to them because they just have to accept that their child is a little #@$& .

Bitching about cellphone rules and encouraging kids to flout them is just another way of undermining the authority of the school and its staff, and quite frankly, I don't give a toss what parents think, I care about the kids . That is why I took on the role of Chair and I'll do whatever it takes to provide a safe and healthy environment for every child who actually wants to learn .
