375977 2005-07-28 04:09:00 I partially agree here . . . but a caning in an American's eyes is just a slight slapping of a switch on the backside . . I said nothing about a sound thrashing or drawing blood .

Although I had parochial school as a youngster, and severe beatings were the norm for the nuns to deliver, it was something our parents paid for and was done with their approval .

Yeah . . . . . . it hurt like all hell . . . and I don't think that was a positive thing for anyone . . . but discipline is not what they were doing anyway . . they were getting their jollies from thrashing a poor kid who forgot the stations of the cross or what a particular bead meant on the rosary .

Now we have teachers afraid to enter a classroom, and some are even behind bulletproof glass to deliver lectures . Where did it all fall apart?

375978 2005-07-28 04:11:00 As far as I can tell there would be no reason to have a cellphone at school, schools provide phones in case of emergency and if your parents need to get hold of you they can through the school...An important phone call is letting you know of a family emergency, not asking you to peel the spuds when you get home.. plod (107)

Totally agree. You'd think a cellphone was a life-saving drug to some of these kids. I wonder how we ever survived our teenage years without them?

Rights of the kids to get their phones back aside, the phones ARE a nuisance for many reasons in the school environment, and are in no way vital for the kids to have/use during school hours.

My wife works in a school library, and her view on the angelic nature of the "children" would be substantially different to that harboured by their parents ....

375981 2005-07-28 04:40:00 Sure the school provides emergency phone access. But only while actually in teh school itself. What if you're on the bus home and you're going to be late? What about if you're at sport? School outing? Travelling home? I hardly think that the school office lady is going to be everywhere with communications access Edward (31)

Which is a valid argument for while the kids should be able to get their confiscated phones back at the end of the day, but again, there's no reason why they should need to use them in class time.

The confiscate-for-an-entire-week thing seems a bit draconian.

375983 2005-07-28 04:49:00 Edward - most schools allow a phone provided it is handed in at 9 am and picked up at 3 pm. And in practise, as Billy says, a blind eye is turned for students who have a phone but don't use it at school. A bit of commonsense goes a long way.

In the real world, employers aren't very understanding about cellphones and texting at work. Do it in your own time.

375984 2005-07-28 05:03:00 As for caneing, well it never did me any harm . But maybe others suffered . Apparently there were teachers who took a sadistic delight in using a cane . Nevertheless I never faced such a teacher and don't remember any teacher like that .

There were teachers who were prodigious caners because they played cricket or tennis . They simply had a very good swing . But not sadistic .

Joe - caneing disappeared about 25 years ago . Prior to that teachers used a bamboo cane about a yard long and would administer anything from 1 -4 blows on the gluteus maximus . At my high school 5 - 12 strokes were administered by the Rector or Deputy Rector and only for serious offences - eg . theft . Above 6 strokes would be administered in two batches, a few days apart . Didn't want the boys to pass out . :D

If blood was drawn, it was rare, and treated .

375985 2005-07-28 05:07:00 Chill, you refer to the price of some cellphones and wonder why someone would even want to take it to school. The main purpose of a cellphone should be for being contactable at any time. If you're too afraid to take your cellphone around with you, what is the point in having it.

There has a been a case in Christchurch where they think that high school students reason for suicide was partially (or wholly) linked to text abuse from other students. You shouldn't bully people at any time, but still this kid should have learnt to IGNORE the stupid crap that others are texting him.

I can see why schools do ban cellphones. It is definitely the best way of preventing cellphones from disrupting lessons. You should be paying attention in lessons.

I'm at polytech now. When sitting an exam your cellphone is OFF and in your bag. The policy that most of the exam watchers have is that if a cellphone goes off it gets thrown out the window if you have the cellphone on you. If you have it in your bag your whole bag goes out the window. Which is fair enough.

Also another thought. Lots of kids have part-time jobs. The best way for an employer to contact you is usually on your cellphone. If my phone vibrates in class because of a call (silent mode) I will either excuse myself if it is suitable to do so, or I'll put it through to my answering service and ring them as soon as possible. Just today I picked up a shift on Saturday when my phone rang mid-stream ;) during a 10min break.

375986 2005-07-28 05:08:00 Winston . . TY for the insight . . .

The only vision of UK-type schools that we have here in the states is from movies like Oliver Twist . . and that doesn't look nice for the students .

I wonder though . . are your schools as we see in the movies like "To Sir, With Love" or not? Gads . . I am dating myself again!
