| 376627 | 2005-08-01 07:46:00 | There seems to be an assumption in some quarters that we are getting a fair deal from Telecom. In view of the fact that they have a strangle hold on the cable thingy, how do we know that we are not being taken advantage of? | Cicero (40) | ||
| 376628 | 2005-08-01 10:19:00 | It's not cheap if you are calling from a business, 4c/min . Sorry about the rant Winston001, guess I've got a bit of pent up rage there . -Qyiet Fair enough . Although 4c/minute which we used to pay is only $2 . 40/hour . I remain astonished at the technological miracle of the internet . Some plans are as low as $10/month . With that you can use email and web browse an infinite amount of information . All through a tiny copper cable . Heck, when I was at university, if you needed to know something, and there wasn't a relevant journal, you were stuffed . You had to write letters to other libraries to see if they had anything . Now Google is only a couple of clicks away . I have to agree with PaulD - Korea has a huge population in a small area . We are a skinny mountainous island nation with a few people . If there was so much money to be made in telecommunications in NZ, don't you think giant companies like Telstra or British Telecom would roll out their own network nationwide? But in fact Telstra have only done so in Wellington and Christchurch, to try and take the cream of the business . The easy urban connections . They aren't interested in Invercargill or the farmers at the back of Duntroon . Nope leave that to Telecom . |

| 376630 | 2005-08-01 13:14:00 | You may indeed be right in your assessment, metla. As someone who's on DialUp with no worries as yet, I'm not beating my breast to get Broadband (Well. not until it's a lot cheaper) so this is just an academic discussion to me. I'm not a gamer - just interested in how the world turns overall - and a variety of opinions. So obviously those of you who have strong opinions on this subject will be sending them where they'll actually count - rather than a wee rave here which makes you feel good without a real affort.. Very true Laura. I will be voting at the next election which as I now understand it will be held on the 17th Sept. Broadband will be not an issue as far as I am concerned. Telecom is not an issue either. I pay Telecom for my phone line only. My toll calls and internet broadband are paid for elsewhere. We all have this choice apart from very much younger people who are maybe using the parents accounts for everything. Some people whom are on this forum are not yet old enough to vote This does not mean I can not listen to their opininion. I do frequently listen. I would like ALL people whom are entitled to actually vote at the next election to get off the posterior and get to a voting booth and cast a couple of votes. Yes! You do get two! Personally I don't care who you vote for. If MMP is ever going to work properly then I would like 100% registration and 100% turn out to cast their votes. Me. I'm looking for Health, Education, Law Enforcement and Tax issues as being major in my opinion. I will vote the way I see it on the day. I do not tell my wonderful Wife how to vote but we both go down and do it! |

Telecom is preventing me from signing up with Telstra Clear, and in effect, from the end of August, unless they relent, I will be forced to go with Xtra whether I wish to to or not . That is definitely anti-competitive behaviour |

Telecom is preventing me from signing up with Telstra Clear, and in effect, from the end of August, unless they relent, I will be forced to go with Xtra whether I wish to to or not. That is definitely anti-competitive behaviour AFAIK Telstra has an arrangement with Telecom that it can resell Telecom lines in areas where Telstra doesn't have its own network. Perhaps Telstra prefers to sell its own product where possible. Your problem is that Telstra does have a network in your area but Telstra is not as ready as Clear/Saturn were to spend money connecting people to it. Possibly why Clear/Saturn lost money and got bought out. |

| 376633 | 2005-08-01 22:58:00 | With respect that isn't quite my problem. The problem is Telecom is refusing to abide by its agreement with Saturn whereby customers more than 100 metres from cable can go to Telstra. I am 500 metres from the nearest Saturn junction box. Subsidiary related problems are Telecoms ineptitude, arrogance and lack of communication in the matter. One person in Broadband Customer Care says one thing, another says something quite different. |

Thats interesting Terry. Telstra is much bigger than Telecom - they should be able to flex their muscles. Don't get me wrong - I don't really like Telecom either. Their customer service is a tautology ie. no service. But even so, the system works most of the time very well. |
