376617 2005-07-31 00:13:00 Sorry, Murray. I can see you didn't read the speech.

Far from comparing NZ's situation favourably with Korea, it points out how far in advance of us the Koreans have managed to develop their broadband system.
(Well, that's how I read it)
In other words, we're the slowcoaches - as you said.

Perish the thought .

Perish the thought.

Your idea of National nationalising Telecom is much better Cic.

376622 2005-07-31 10:58:00 Lockwood Smith, the local MP for the Rodney District came through my work today.

I asked him if anyone in Parliament was going to be doing anything about Telecom.
And he asked what I meant.

I told him that Telecom was a monopolistic theiving corporation that needs to be reviewed again and regulated.

He then told me that we have quite good telecommunications competition in New Zealand.

Granted that he is not a minister of anything to do with telecommunications. but I thought an MP might know more than that.

Sure on the surface, maybe it looks like theres competition, but the only real competition is at the cellphone side of things. Telephone and internet all goes through the same lines owned by Telecom.

Maybe he thought I was complaining about the Cellphone prices being the highest in the OECD, but I dunno.

Anyway, I told him I had started a website protesting Telecom and was interested enough to get me to write down the address for him.

Hopefully that will do something... I just wish I had more content for it... anyone care to contribute?

He then told me that we have quite good telecommunications competition in New Zealand . I emailed both my national and labour candidates last week . I've only got a response from one, National: and it was more or less "Oh you are concerned about telecomunications, really?" .

At least National gave me a response, and I guess that it at least partially brought the idea to their attention .

Depressingly similar response though .

376624 2005-08-01 03:04:00 I don't get it . What is the problem? I'm in business and use jetstream . Fast and reliable .

But most of my work is done with people face to face or else on our office computers . Same for the local farmer, plumber, electrician, and mechanic . Their cell phones work . The internet works . Great . But their real work which puts food on the table has very little to do with broadband .

So I really don't get it . Everyone complains about paying bills . Nothing novel about that . But most people still have cellphones and internet access if they want it . Dialup may be slow but it works and is cheap . I'd live with it (as I did at the weekend) without complaint .

376625 2005-08-01 03:26:00 I don't get it . What is the problem? I'm in business and use jetstream . Fast and reliable . Lucky for you . I have suffered from technical issues from telecom ranging from taking months to connect the service, to just unplugging our one of offices from the exchange (boy that was fun it took about 14 days before they believed there was a problem . "We can see you are connected right now")

Onto monopoly exploitation: I personally know of at least one person who has been forced to use xtra after telecom was *unable* to setup his dsl line for orcon . Oh and they tried . ask xtra . *magic* it's done .

let alone what the poor ISPs have to put up with, being stuck reselling the crap that telecom lets them, while starting new services that leave those plans dead .

Dialup may be slow but it works and is cheap . It's not cheap if you are calling from a business, 4c/min .

Sorry about the rant Winston001, guess I've got a bit of pent up rage there .

376626 2005-08-01 03:29:00 Because it doesn't represent good value for money. It might have got into the realm of affordable for the common people over the last year but it still is overpriced and kneecapped for the sake of it.

I don't want to pay $150 a month for internet for my company, but I have to have it.Is it worth $150?,hell no.

My main issue is that they control the competion, and they justify the extra costs by saying its to cover infranstructure, In the real world you take a punt, offer something at what you feel is a good pricepoint and hope it covers your outlay, If it doesn't then you fail (planning helps)

If I was to say open a net cafe I would spend say 30 grand, then sell at a cost that would be in line with the competion and it would be up to me to pay the outlay from the profits and skim what I have left over.

If telecom were to open a net cafe they would spend 20 grand, pay themselves a million each and then charge $100 an hour, telling customers its fair because its to cover the setup costs. They would only get away with it because they have no competition (granted they would have competition in the net cafe bizzo but the point remains)
