| 376407 | 2005-07-29 01:22:00 | When i saw it last night there were aliens that were as scary as the ones by whats-his-name in "Meet the feebles". Infact the entire program is at that level of plot, humor and special effects. Were the farting aliens meant to be funny??? its soooo 70's, and so budget. The Joy of Dr Who and other British Sci Fi used to be that their plots were fantastic and their sets sucked. who cared though about the sets beacuse the charactor development and ideas were far better than anything out of America. Not any more.... This Dr Who is a poor shadow of Baker and pertwee. His perpetually grinning face reduces the entire story to the level of farce. As a kid it was "hide behind the sofa " type stories, now its farting aliens and crappy self mocking lnes. You mus be joking!!! Same level of technology? Have you looked at any old Dr Who recently? I have - a lot of it. I enjoy it immensely but let me tell you there is absolutely no comparison betwee the FX/Technology used by the Beeb for the old Dr Who, from 63-89 and that which is used for this new Dr Who. Given the budget the BBC has, compared to US networks, I think they've done a great job. |

You were bitching about the technology and "foam aliens" and i was merely pointing out that they were far in advance of what was on offer back then. I agree that plot and charcater are more important - that's why I still love old Dr Who episodes, but I think this new show is doing quite well. |

It was never scary.. just kids get scared easy. (hell I rember being scared of the opening sequence of Dr Who, and little shop of horrors). -Qyiet |

| 376411 | 2005-07-29 05:20:00 | Haven't watched the new series yet but always enjoyed Dr Who. The difference between Dr Who and say, Lost In Space and early Star Trek, was the story development. The American programs, which I also enjoyed, relied upon impressive set construction and fairly good stories. But the acting was often wooden - exempt Doctor Smith and the Robot. The Dr Who stories were probably no better in hindsight but the characterisation and scripts were far superior. As was the acting. Looking back it seems to me that Dr Who stimulated the imagination and was more effective at psychological verisimilitude. I was willing to suspend disbelief and be caught up in the tale. Star Trek always looked too earnest by comparison. And the sets were nearly believable which was a problem - because they didn't quite make it. :2cents: |

| 376413 | 2005-07-29 09:22:00 | pctek - On Wednesday Dr Who admiited he got Sky on the Tardis monitor so he could watch the football. Presumably he doesn't pay for it. What as in Dr Who watches sky - that must be tricky getting transimission through time, when they can't even manage when it rains. :D And on UKTV they just started running Hitchhikers Guide again...the original. |
