375957 2005-07-27 12:53:00 Surely if we were in America we could do teachers for keeping the property somehow, under their weird American laws :p

With the price of a cellphone (I personally have an iMate JAM), would you even want to take it to school (as mentioned) with the likelyhood of theft?

Surely though you can also see it from the Teachers perspective, that you are there to learn + study. Socialization can come after 3pm. Rather than sending a txt to your mate during class to say "meet by in the library at lunch", discuss it before school... or (shock horror) the night before ;)

I got hassled so much because I was smart enough to have 24-48 hours forsight when I was at school. But when it came to crunch time, I found I was always better prepared....

Im tired :( bed for me

375958 2005-07-27 13:27:00 I sympathise with Prescott. Damn schools are always over-exercising their rights. I can't see what's wrong with using the phone during breaks - it's part of youth culture these days. Probably some jumped-up idiot of a head teacher can't adapt with the times and wants to deprive the youngsters of stuff he never had as a kid. Greg (193)
375959 2005-07-27 20:33:00 I can't see what's wrong with using the phone during breaks - it's part of youth culture these days .

As pointed out previously, schools are in loco-parentis and have very strict obligations in law to provide a "safe and effective learning environment" .

Let's not have our school attending members (or their elders and hopefully betters) get all mealy-mouthed and pretend that they do not know all the negative uses phones are put to during school time, from serious harassment (sexual and otherwise) to cheating, inciting violence, distracting from studies, ordering drugs and a host of others that I am probably too old to even guess at . We have expelled and excluded students for phone-organised activities and campaigns of harrassment . Not to mention the incidence of theft of course, because they are easily traded for various other items and substances .

The day will eventually come when we install cellphone detectors or signal-blanking technology to put an end to cellphone usage on site, but in the meantime if a phone appears it is confiscated, and given back at the end of the day .

Maybe a week is too long, but that's a call the Principal and Board have to make . I prefer one day at a time myself, because those who believe they can buck the system get into continual disobedience territory much faster that way . We have had Youth Law and Lawyers appear to argue from time to time, they waste our time but they don't win . We do it once and we do it right, and you should see the effect when one of their smart-arse know-it-all, bush-lawyer rebel-heros gets the chop, compliance improves dramatically .

I make no apologies for ejecting from the school those students who think they already know it all . They are a disruptive influence on students who are there to learn and don't continually offend, even those who still bring phones but don't use them during school time, breaks included . We turn a Nelsonian eye to that .

Some of those rebels looking for a cause are in for a rude shock when they hit the workplace . That's the real world and much less forgiving than school .

There they face real consequences .

Cheers

As Billy points out there are very good reasons for using cell phones AT ANY TIME DURING SCHOOL HOURS.

The reason cell phone usage is often banned during breaks is "text bullies".

Name 3.
Its because they don't stick to using them at lunchtime. They have to be texting each other 24/7.

375962 2005-07-27 22:28:00 And I bumped into a bullyboy science teacher a few years ago who had caned me till I bled, Seems he wasn't so quick to hand out violence when confronted in the middle of town with his wife and children.Sadistic little ****.

We had one like that at school. Eventually the headmaster banned him from further caning. If he wanted a boy caned he had to go and get another teacher to do it for him. he just enjoyed it a little bit too much, if you know what I'm saying.

Personally, I could never work out what kind of person wanted to cane a kid, especially since it was ineffective - your kudos went up no end by being caned so as a deterrant to bad behaviour it was useless.

Nonsense. Sheesh some people make it sound like cell phone use at school are being used to create anarchy, demporalise the local populace, create fear and mayhem, reduce the econmy to tatters and cause worldwide plague. :groan:
If my kids had had their phones confiscated the damn teacher/principle would be looking at getting a thick ear.

375964 2005-07-27 23:04:00 we have banned the apprentice from using is cellphone during work hours because of his constant txting, when you have a hands on job you can't txt and work at same time.. plod (107)

That reminds me of one incident in the past when the Principal was arguing with a redneck parent. The parent threatened to thump the Principal, who calmly asked the secretary in the next room to ring the police and get them down at once. The parent deflated rather quickly.
It's easy to see where some stroppy bush lawyer kids get their attitudes from...
You're not only dealing with the kids but their parents as well (who only see the kids side of the story - just watch some of the biased media reporting on TV in some conflicts with a school - you always get the impression that the kid is an angel-yeah right).

375966 2005-07-27 23:19:00 Can't trust teachers, They have spent everyday of their lives in school since they were 5. Makes them narrow-minded. Nearly every teacher I have ever seen is suffering from being in the one job for to long, It shows in their face and their manner.

And they wear funny shorts.

Muhahahahaha.
