663067 2008-04-27 10:24:00 ^ Yup, cables best to get at computer shops, don't know if they will make you up one though.. ? I just stick to TradeMe.

From my personal experiences in extending the phone cables, the differences have been significant enough for me to make sure I use only the length cable that I need. It could be that there is a 'top grade' of cables for the RJ11's but I haven't come across any in my experiences. Just standard 'Dick Smith' stuff.

Just to say some figures, in two difference houses, the difference between a 1 m cable and a 5m cable for me meant approx 500kbps (meant bits, forgot if bits are B or b :S) as reported by my modems 'System status' screen.

663068 2008-04-27 10:27:00 BLONDE ALERT!
So say it again slowly......do I run the cable from his pc directly to my adsl modem or to directly to my pc....or connect it directly to my ethernet cable?
I'm a visual person so am having trouble understanding where I run these leads to and from...'sorry'

663069 2008-04-27 10:37:00 haha sorry, we started talking of stuff thats probably not your concern.

yes you are right, you are best to get 4m (or whatever it is you need, ethernet cable is good enough for much more than you will ever use room to room in the same house) of a CAT5/5e (ethernet cable) cable and take that from your router to Master 12's computer. Use standard USB to yours provided you can get that to work. That way you can browse simultaneously.

663070 2008-04-27 16:01:00 I would prefer the router stay in the office, so shall I get an extension ethernet cable and run it from the router to his computer? it's 4 meters from my pc to his.

that gives you two options........either he is on the net and you are not at the same time

or

you are going to try connecting thru the usb and give him the ethernet......

you will find as someone has said that your pc will be needing a usb pci card (maybe $25) in order to run a decent speed of usb.....

otherwise you'll be strangling your pcs internet connection.......

another potential problem is that if you are running win98 1st edition NOT win98SE (2nd edition) then you may find that you cant even use the usb connection from your pc to the modem as most will not have drivers for 98 1st ed.........

all in all it's the most sensible solution to put the modem into his room and connect him with the usb cable already supplied.........and buy a $10 ethernet cable and run it to your pc .........both systems will be able to share the connection that way and it'll cost you damn all and be very very simple to setup

663071 2008-04-28 01:35:00 I have win 98 SE..but I had enormous problems with broadband so went to an ethernet cable connection.
I will try him on the usb cable and see what happens.
Other than that we will take turns on the internet as i don't want him on it all the time..only to get what he needs .. and hour here and there.

Thank you for your help...I will holler again if i get stuck

You guys rule!!

I'm not going near a usb cable for my win98 SE... it just causes so many problems for me, which is why the pc technician put me through the ethernet cable thingee.

Will try Master 12 on the usb.....

663073 2008-04-28 02:15:00 Just to throw my oar in on the topic, for between $30 and $50 you can get a network switch. Plug it into the router/modem, then ethernet cables from the switch to each computer.
This is the "standard" way of doing things, I'd forget all about USB.

Of course your troubles are only just starting when junior gets unleashed onto the Internet :)

663074 2008-04-28 05:04:00 I'd agree with Terry, a cheap 100M 5 or 8 port switch is the way to go. It will also let you network the 2 pc's and share files & printers, play multiplayer games etc, if you wanted to. Shouldn't cost much more than $30.

Also not all usb / ethernet modems allow both interfaces to be used at the same time.

Yep, you don't wanna use USB .

Heres how network will work best .

ADSL Modem ~ethernet cable~ 5 (or more) Port Switch ~2x ethernet cables, one going to your PC, one to the other .

Lengths don't matter, as long as it's long enough for what you need . It doesn't matter if you have some coiled up under the table .

663076 2008-04-28 06:13:00 and why dont they want to use usb ?

I've setup several people wiht this method on d-link (xtra supplied) modems so that two pc's could access the net at the same time and there was not any particular problems

why spend money they may not wish to spend.......

to a lot of folks the $30 for a ethernet hub might break the bank
