663040 2008-04-27 21:45:00 Same browser I always use, IE, which works fine for everything else and has always worked for Gmail.

His access is not actually via a network, he connects straight to the adsl modem via a switch. No other components of the network need to be on for a single computer to access the net or email etc.

I may not have made the symptom clear enough though: I can log on, Gmail loads at normal speed and I can see the normal processing messages & data flashing past at the bottom of the screen. However, "Done" is a blank page.

The same problem happens on both my computer/my account and my son's computer/his account. So, individually we are logged in and loaded, but the final page is blank. Closing down the firewall (completely) then trying makes no difference.

Does that make it any clearer?

Cheers

I've run into this issue before, and a force refresh of the "Done" page (Ctrl+F5) has done it for me - though I assume you have already tried this.

I hadn't.

I Have, have, have, have.

It didn't, didn't, didn't, didn't!

663042 2008-04-27 22:33:00 I've deleted cookies, cleared browser cache manually (usually just run CCleaner) cold-rebooted router and computer after clearing then tried again with same result.

Googling the problem only brings up actions I have already taken.

Curiouser and curiouser said the cat. It isn't a problem for me because I only use Gmail for PF1 alerts but my son uses it for all his email so it is quite important to him.

Might get my laptop out and try that, if it isn't working too then it is starting to look like some change that Google has made that affects my version of IE. I tried my print-server which is ancient and has IE5.5 installed (it is rarely used for web access) but it can't even open the Gmail page!

663043 2008-04-27 22:55:00 Can I recommend you download the latest Firefox Beta version and give it a try? Cant hurt to help, right? Eliminates that its that browser alone, and then leaves us to think of other non-browser settings on the machines that might be causing the issue (not as likely) or a remote issue (more likely I would guess right now)..

663044 2008-04-28 00:04:00 I can't find any way to contact Googlemail, they mention "limited email access" but nothing leads to an actual email address. If anybody has that address I'd appreciate it.

In the meantime, and responding to Chill, isn't downloading a beta an open invitation to add other unwanted problems? Where can I find a release version for download, or is it on any of the recent PCW DVDs?

Alternatively, is there a mature small-footprint browser alternative, Opera maybe?

I have to fix this today because my son uses GM for his Uni emails and he is desperate to catch up with recent messages.

Cheers

663045 2008-04-28 00:07:00 I'm not sure if you're describing the same problem I sometimes encounter; it sometimes just sits there, saying Loading... after logging in.

This usually happens when the url changes from to http:
If you change it back to https://, and hit refresh, it will load the page. Same for wanting to look at your inbox etc.

663046 2008-04-28 00:16:00 So you've tried Gmail's HTML mode (mail.google.com)? Also, it's probably a default thing now but are you accessing Gmail vis SSL (https://mail.google.com/)? sal (67)
663047 2008-04-28 00:49:00 Perhaps a Beta is, however on the other side of the coin its the 'latest' browser, and I'd hesitate a guess and say its more likely to work the the latest & greatest web apps because its the latest & greatest itself :)

My theory anyways ;)

As for small-footprint browser, you could try something like Dillo, but I think it might be Linux-only...

Why not just grab Opera or Firefox off the latest PCWorld CD and un-install it when you're done? Its only a temporary measure so we can rule out the possibility of it being browser-specific.

663048 2008-04-28 00:58:00 Opera has known issues with GMail v2, so it's not a very good test platform . Erayd (23)
663049 2008-04-28 01:03:00 I'm not sure if you're describing the same problem I sometimes encounter; it sometimes just sits there, saying Loading . . . after logging in .

This usually happens when the url changes from . " target="_blank"> to http:
If you change it back to https://, and hit refresh, it will load the page . Same for wanting to look at your inbox etc .

No, it is not stopping on "Loading", I've seen that before . It actually loads fully but to a blank page .

Cutting a long story short, time was getting critical for my son, and I ran out of time myself, so I found Firefox on a PCW DVD and loaded that, which worked ok as I expected it would, but i had been trying to avoid making changes to an otherwise established and reliable system . Now there's a FF learning curve to negotiate for him but at least he can read his mail .

Thanks to all for the help, I guess our version of IE just fell off the end of Gmail's support .

Cheers
