662876 2008-04-27 03:34:00 I bought an Epson CX5900 in Jan. for $99 from DSE.
It has a LCD screen. The genuine cartridges are $16.5 ea. Has 4. I was very impressed with the features at that price. Is Pictbridge and has a side door that takes most memory cards.

662877 2008-04-27 04:49:00 I bought a set of Canon CLi refiles this week for $99. The large package came and inside as well was 240 6x4 foto print sheets. i.e they want to use these "free" 6x4s so that you will buy more ink. Why don't they forget about the paper and drop the ink by $30 or so. I see over the past few months that Canon CLi ink has gone up anout $5 per cart.. paulw (1826)
662878 2008-04-27 09:50:00 Yes they probably do BUT it is not a good idea to use it.

The place I used to work at was the repair agent for Canon printers and they also repaired other makes.
The number one cause for most of the printing faults was due to people using 3rd party inks.

I know of a few people who have always used 3rd party ink and have never had a problem so it's up to you if want to take the risk.

What is it with the refills exactly that causes the problem?

662879 2008-05-02 09:13:00 The other problem to keep in mind if using third party refills is that some machines cannot / will not tell you how full the refills are anyway. advena (13666)
662880 2008-05-02 14:04:00 I would still like to know how refilling a cartridge with new ink could break your printer? It's the same cartridge, just topped up.

It seems to me like refilling a tin of paint. It's not going to ruin your paintbrush :illogical

Not being silly here, I seriously want to know the reason why they say not to use refills. they always say you shouldn't and that it can damage your printer, but what exactly is the cause, apparently?

It's essential that the ink be scrupulously clean. The ink dries very quickly (so it doesn't smudge after printing) so any specks which dry during the refilling process or on the equipment used etc can produce even minute "clots" which can block ink ducts or the minuscule orifices in the printhead. If you do a net search you should be able to find plenty of info on this. There have been PF1 threads on this topic and might even be an FAQ.
