375710 2005-07-31 18:08:00 Chill . . . . .

I ran the WGA on all my 'puters, and YES . . it scans the key, the date on install, and a lot of other stuff . . . it adds an Active-x device that allows it to run all thru the opsys to check it out .

If your system is not registered there is a general denial of service .

I don't feel however that there are gonna be Windows cops at your door trying to take your 'puter away from you if you don't have a registered copy . . but they ARE offering a free key if you rat out from where and whom you got the system .

WGA is supposed to not phone home other than disallowing you to get updates to improve the system, but the security stuff is still gonna be sent even if you have a hack version . They want to keep the ether clean from mal-code and stuff, and they are NICE enuff to do that . . . until $$ can be made from not sending that too! <speaking quietly up my sleeve here>

edited for spelling errors . .

375711 2005-07-31 18:13:00 BTW: running the WGA Active-X was NOT an option...you have to do it now, not like when they allowed you to say "Later" to the testing and just got the updates anyway. Now there is no option...but you can stop getting updates if you turn off the auto-updater and never go there manually too.

When you goto the updates page...the scan starts with or without your permission.

This goes along with my statement that everyone here pooped on...that Longhorn, now Vista, is just gonna be a technical extension of XP anyway...this is just the way to close the door on getting a bootleg copy of the new opsys.....if they do this now, then the WGA will not let you upgrade to Vista.

375712 2005-07-31 21:40:00 What happens if Windows isnt yet activated? Does it check the product-key regardless?

Tried that at the weekend on a test PC to try IE7 beta 1 which requires WGA to install.(Beta crap software requiring WGA... that's taking it abit far) . WinXP would not validate as it was not activated..

375716 2005-08-02 00:07:00 Interesting... If in IE, you go to Tools-Internet Options-Programs-Manage Add Ons, WGA can be disabled.
I can then still go to Windows Update and get optional software updates if I want, even though a popup comes up saying a required Add On is disabled.
