2005-07-29 04:28:00 | Does anyone know if any of the major parties are going to DO anything useful about the state of telecommunications in New Zealand? Hell, even any of the minor parties? -Qyiet

2005-07-29 05:34:00 | No. They would have dealt with the idiots by now, if they were. They're more interested in killing the interest for student loans Bringing in the fart tax Watch petrol prices rise, so instead of ppl buying it, they fill up and drive off lol I dont think its upto the govt, thats what the commerce commission is for, but they havent done a hell of a lot lately about it. The only way to fix it, is either leave NZ. For somewhere else. Or sign up, with Woosh. Then u wont need Telecom.

Besides that I would want to wait till I get indepdent confirmation that their latancy problems are solved. But I am already using an WISP that bypasses telecom. Killed my landline too. Dosn't stop me from having to deal with their monumental screwups on at work in areas where I can't avoid them. -Qyiet |

2005-07-29 07:49:00 | Labour aren't doing anything about it. They had the chance to enforce unbundling and blew it (probably taking a few backhanders from Telescum). I won't be voting Labour - but I don't expect any of the other political muppets to get up and do anything about it either. As Speedy rightly points out, there are too many other more important issues for them to waste their time on (like taxing our farts, belches, bogies and bad breath etc).

2005-07-29 08:38:00 | Who cares about the fart tax... My votes going to go to whoever gives the least to the supposedly but unrighteously "indigineous" people of this countries. Don't get me wrong, I ain't trying to diss on maoris cos I know that stereotyping is bad and rah rah rah but I think they've bludged enough. It makes me sick to my stomach to know where my petrol tax is really going.... btw... incase you were wondering about my previous comment, NZ has been inhabited by humans for more than 5000 years, and the Maori only arrived here in 1350AD (the mori-ori only 20 years before that) so their land claiming makes me feel nothing but disrespect for those involved... and sadly, the whole race... http://www.celticnz.co.nz

2005-07-29 08:47:00 | The latest (third, by our count) TVNZ foray into the digital realm appears to have unceremoniously sucked the kumara . The Freeview digital service was announced by the state broadcaster in 2003 . The plan was to offer a free digital service to those prepared to invest in a set top box . But all of a sudden, nothing is happening on the Freeview front . Word within around the market place is that the project has been put on ice . All of which leaves several really interesting questions to be answered . You see, to make the service possible TVNZ took a three year lease on a satellite transponder . The cost: a little under $7 million a year . And an option on a further transponder was signed up as well . But now, the Freeview service seems to be going nowhere . Any pretence that a rollout is imminent has been abandoned . So the question which remains is just why the state broadcaster has committed to $20 million worth of transponder space which clearly it cant use . Not as interesting as Judy Baileys pay packet, but surely worthy of an explanation .
