375370 2005-07-26 02:39:00 Leave it to Mr . Bill to plot or plan the future for us . The latest "hurry and catch-up" act is a new SPY-IN-THE-SKY extension in competition with Google Maps .

Microsoft launched a beta version of MSN Virtual Earth (http://virtualearth . msn . com/) yesterday -- the company's answer to the mapping service that rivals Google's debuted earlier this year .

The service features aerial views of cities along with maps of highways and landmarks, and offers the ability to search for a local business and see its location plotted on a map . However, there are still a few bugs to be worked out . For one thing, MSN Virtual Earth doesn't yet offer the promised bird's-eye view made possible by Microsoft's deal with Pictometry International . For another, its database of satellite images may be in need of an upgrade .

Search for: 1 Infinite Loop in MSN Virtual Earth and you'll find not Apple's Cupertino headquarters but a great big vacant lot . "Not as much as a black turtle-necked jumper remains of Apple's headquarters," John Oates reports in The Register . "This could be no more than an old picture taken before Cupertino was built or a glimpse of an imagined future . How this terrible error came about is not yet clear . Nor can we be certain who else has been removed from Bill's upgraded planet . "
