664390 2008-04-30 10:20:00 Hello members
I am very interested on opinions about the above machine.
Good and bad points, anything. Anyone of you using it?
Has anyone used it with VM-machines? How is the performance?
I'm looking forward to read the comments.
Thanks

664391 2008-04-30 13:27:00 recommend getting the 7200rpm drive. it seems to give a big performance boost.
XP running through VMware works a treat. Haven't used parallels for a while so can't comment.

The more ram the better.

664392 2008-04-30 16:24:00 Can a mod clean this thread (I mean actually delete the above stupid posts).

First of all (and to state the obvious), they're highly over-priced. Even considering build quality (of which, between manufacturers, it is anyway), in my conservative opinion they're overpriced by 20%. If price is no object then push on.

My boss (yep, I'm a lowly employee) bought a 17" MBP several weeks ago and as it should it performs. Boot Camp into XP or Vista just fine, run a VM of XP and/or Ubuntu while running OS X no prob, what more could you ask for. I use Parallels and a work colleague uses VMware Fusion and I'm honestly envious so that's my angle on VM software for OS X. There's always the free VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org/) for OS X available too, but the previous mentioned (Fusion particularly) are decent commercial software.

But besides all that I still think it's largely mystic that makes the MacBook Pro. You either "need" one or you don't.

Just wonder what "nice things"the other two members had to say to be deleted?
To the machine;
By normal use, what is the lifespan of a MBP ?
If it is overpriced, what other machine would compare in quality?(and price)
Any other issues that are not good with the MBP?

664394 2008-04-30 20:17:00 Well, a pretty extensive list of MBP faults can be found at Apple Defects (www.appledefects.com). It's a list built up over the lifespan of the MBP so largely they wouldn't apply to brand new ones, although I hear heats a pretty constant issue with them. The wiki's worth a scan if you're seriously considering one though. Will get back to you on price comparisons but I'm sure other's will have great alternative recommendations.

Closely related, here's a semi-recent price comparison for and against between PCs and Macs (stash.ableapp.com).

It really depends on individual usage, but as a high end machine it will certainly last a lot longer than cheaper, plastic laptops. I personally think the build quality of Apple's laptops is excellent and they hold up well to being bashed around in suitcases and backpacks. This is based on having had one PowerBook, two MacBook Pros and a MacBook Air in the family over the last five years. There are a few exterior blemishes on the older ones, but all of the important components work perfectly.

As for price, sure they are more expensive, but I know people with cheap Windows based laptops less than six months old and the battery life is already down to an hour, so I think its fair to say that you get what you pay for. :)
