664329 2008-04-30 08:52:00 Hi
I was wondering if someone can explain in lay man's language what Blue Tooth is. I have a laptop and would like to be able to pick up hot spots and was wondering what equipment I would need. As you will guess I am a "newby" to this side of technology.
Many thanks

664330 2008-04-30 09:49:00 Welcome to PressF1 :)

Bluetooth is an industrial specification for wireless personal area networks (PANs). Bluetooth provides a way to connect and exchange information between devices such as mobile phones, laptops, personal computers, printers, GPS receivers, digital cameras, and video game consoles over a secure, globally unlicensed short-range radio frequency.

What you need depends on what equipment you have and what you want to do with it. Post more info and we'll help you have.

664331 2008-04-30 09:51:00 You need a wireless adapter (or wireless built in) not Bluetooth

They do different things

If this laptop shows or has something like this (((o)))) on it, it probably has wireless as well

If you're certain your laptop has Bluetooth support then it would certainly have Wi-Fi support too. A wee bit more info on your laptop model and OS and we can be a lot more helpful. Just a quick analogy off the top of my head - a toothpick (Bluetooth) is OK for eating finger food, but a knife and fork (Wi-Fi) is better for a steak meal.

Eugh, stupid analogy.
