663957 2008-04-29 09:30:00 Well I finally bit the bullet and bought a new 160GB WD hard drive and Windows XP Home.

Installed them and, apart from a few problems with the IDE cable which a friend and I fixed, everything has been working well until the above error showed up.

It hurts a lot that something effectively out of the box doesn't work properly the first time.

Now I admit that I haven't installed all the Windows Hotfixes (or whatever that crowd in Seattle call them), but I am planning on waiting until I get broadband in the next day or so.

Any ideas?

663958 2008-04-29 09:33:00 What version of IE is it? 6 or 7??

WHAT addons are installed?? (ie: Google toobar, or any kind of toolbar)?

And WHEN does it crash?? When you run IE, or when you close IE?

663959 2008-04-29 09:46:00 IE6 off the Win XP disc

When IE6 is running.

Google toolbar is installed and running.

AVG 8 also installed a Yahoo Toolbar which is hidden - I can try and reinstall AVG8 if necessary.

I am also getting a Generic Host Process error while IE6 is running

I installed the WindowsXP-KB894391-x86-ENU.exe package from the Microsoft website

663960 2008-04-29 09:49:00 I would install SP1 / 2 at least, if these havent been installed

I wouldnt get on the net with no service pack at all. Youre asking for trouble

Disable google toolbar if u can disable it

663961 2008-04-29 09:57:00 According to Belarc Advisor SP2 is installed.

I really would like to keep Google Toolbar if I can - or do you think that is causing both problems?

663962 2008-04-29 10:04:00 Hmm have you installed the latest version of sun java?

I would (if you've still got the install for google toolbar uninstall it).

If it keeps crashing thats not the prob reinstall it

Isnt there a repair option in add/remove programs ??? Highlight IE 6, see if it gives you a repair option
Speedy Gonzales (78)
663963 2008-04-29 10:15:00 Thanks Speedy

Add/Remove programs shows Java RTE 1.1 is installed.

Google toolbar is easy enough to get - I can uninstall and get it again if necessary.

I'll do some more work on this tomorrow night..

Thanks for all the help...

663964 2008-04-29 10:18:00 Add/Remove programs shows Java RTE 1.1 is installed.

Never heard of it get the latest version which is JRE 6 update 6

Uninstall that version whatever it is

Does IE 6 appear in add/remove programs?? If it does see if theres a repair option for it
Speedy Gonzales (78)
663965 2008-05-01 08:01:00 IE6 doesn't appear in Add/Remove programs Chris Randal (521)
663966 2008-05-01 08:10:00 Redownload it or install IE 7 then, and uninstall Java 1.1 whatever it is.

Link is in my sig for 6 update 6

Or wait till u get BB, and update Windows / update to IE 7
